IX . The Fire on the Mountain And where is the messenger ? He is far away from the palace . For two days he rides through towns and villages . He asks everybody for their names , and he writes them all down . But there is a problem . These are all old names . John , Peter , Martin , Thomas . Everybody knows them , and the queen knows them too . “ There are no new names in this country , ” he thinks . “ What can I do ? ” On the second evening he comes to a big forest . He rides into it . The trees are tall and dark . At the end of the forest there is a high mountain . It is a lonely place , far from any town . The fox and the hare say good night to each other there . The messenger rides up the mountain . It is dark now . Then , between the trees , he sees a light . It is a fire . Next to the fire there is a little house . The messenger gets off his horse . He walks very quietly to the trees near the house . He stands behind a big tree , and he looks . A little man is jumping round the fire . He is a very funny little man . He hops on one leg , round and round the fire . And he sings in a loud voice : “ Today I bake , tomorrow I brew , The day after , the queen’s child is mine . Nobody knows my name , it’s true : Rumpelstiltskin ! Oh , how fine ! ” The messenger listens with wide eyes . “ Rumpelstiltskin , ” he says to himself . “ What a strange name ! Rum - pel - stilt - skin . Rumpelstiltskin . ” He says it again and again . He does not want to forget it . The little man sings his song one more time . Then he laughs and goes into his little house . The messenger walks quietly back to his horse . He rides down the mountain and through the dark forest . He rides all night , and he does not stop . X . What Is My Name ? The third day comes . Early in the morning , the messenger rides up to the palace . His horse is tired , and he is tired too . He runs to the queen . “ My Queen , ” he says , “ I did not find a single new name . Not one . But listen . Last night I came to a high mountain at the end of the forest . There I saw a little house with a fire in front of it . A funny little man was jumping round the fire on one leg . And he sang a song . ” “ What song ? ” asks the queen . “ Tell me ! ” The messenger sings the song for her , word for word . When the queen hears the name , her heart jumps with joy . “ Rumpelstiltskin , ” she says quietly . “ Thank you ! Oh , thank you ! ” She sits down next to the baby’s bed , and she waits . Soon the door opens , and the little man comes in . He is smiling , and he rubs his little hands . “ Good morning , Your Majesty , ” he says . “ This is the last day . Now , what is my name ? ” The queen looks at him . She does not smile . “ Is your name Conrad ? ” she asks . “ No . ” “ Is your name Harry ? ” “ No , ” says the little man , and he laughs . He takes a step towards the baby’s bed . “ Then perhaps , ” says the queen , “ your name is Rumpelstiltskin ? ” The little man stops . His face goes red , then white , then red again .
