Then they bring the mouse . It is a fine grey mouse , fast and strong . Tom jumps on its back . “ Look at me ! ” says Tom . “ I am a knight ! ” Tom rides his mouse up and down the hall . He looks very proud . Now , when the king goes out hunting with his lords , Tom goes too , on his mouse . The mouse runs this way and that way . Tom holds on and waves his needle in the air . The king and the lords laugh and laugh . They laugh so much that they can hardly stay on their horses . The king likes Tom’s good manners very much . So he gives Tom more and more presents . First , he gives Tom a little chair . Tom puts it on the king’s table . Now he can sit on the table next to the king at dinner . Then he gives Tom a little house to live in . It is a palace of gold ! It is only as high as a man’s hand . The door is only one inch wide . But for Tom , it is just right . Then he gives Tom a coach . Six little mice pull it . Tom sits in the coach and rides all round the court . X . The Angry Queen But not everybody is happy . The queen is angry . She does not like all these presents for Tom . “ A gold palace ! ” she says to herself . “ A coach with six mice ! A chair on the king’s table ! And for what ? For a little man from a fish ! ” She wants to get Tom into trouble . So she goes to the king . “ That little knight of yours , ” she says . “ Sir Thomas . He was very rude to me today . ” “ Rude ? To you ? ” says the king . Now the king is angry too . He calls his men . “ Bring Tom to me , ” he says . “ Quickly ! ” Tom hears this . He knows that an angry king is dangerous . So he runs and hides . In the garden , he finds an empty snail shell . He climbs into it . Tom stays in the snail shell for a long time . He has nothing to eat , and he gets very , very hungry . At last , he looks out . Near the shell , on the ground , there is a big butterfly . Tom goes very quietly up to it . Then he jumps on its back . The butterfly flies up into the air , with Tom on its back . It flies from tree to tree . It flies from field to field . And at last it flies back to the king’s court . “ Look ! ” says the king . “ It is Tom , on a butterfly ! Catch him ! ” The king and all his lords run after the butterfly . But they can’t catch it . Then Tom falls off . He falls down , down , into a watering can . It is full of water . The water is over his head . He can’t get out . The lords pull him out just in time . The queen sees him , and she is very , very angry . “ This bad little man must die ! ” she says .
