I . The Poor Beggar Once upon a time , in the days of King Arthur , there lives a great magician . His name is Merlin . He is very wise . He knows more than any other man in the world . And he can change the way he looks . He can look like anybody he likes . One day , Merlin goes out on the road . Today he looks like a poor beggar . His clothes are old and grey . He walks and walks , and he gets very tired . He is hungry too . Near the road there is a little house . A ploughman lives there with his wife . A ploughman works in the fields with a plough . The plough cuts long lines in the ground , and then the ploughman puts seeds in them . Merlin knocks on the door . The ploughman opens it . “ Good day , ” says Merlin . “ I am a poor old man , and I am very tired . Can I rest here for a while ? And do you have some food for me ? ” “ Come in , come in , ” says the ploughman . “ You are welcome here . ” His wife is a very kind woman . She brings Merlin some milk in a wooden bowl . She also brings some brown bread on a plate . “ Thank you , ” says Merlin . “ You are very kind . ” Merlin eats the bread and drinks the milk . The little house is clean and warm . But the ploughman and his wife do not smile . Their faces are sad . “ Tell me , ” says Merlin . “ You have a nice home . So why are you so sad ? ” The ploughman looks at his wife . His wife looks down at the floor . “ We have no children , ” says the ploughman . “ And we want a child very much . ” His wife has tears in her eyes . “ Oh , I want a son so much , ” she says . “ If I have a son , I will be the happiest woman in the world . He does not need to be big . He can be as small as my husband’s thumb . I don’t mind . I will love him all the same . ” Merlin looks at the ploughman’s hand . The ploughman has a normal thumb . It is not big , and it is not small . A boy as small as that thumb ! Merlin thinks it is a very funny idea . He smiles , but he says nothing . “ Thank you for the food , ” he says . “ Goodbye . ” He goes back out onto the road . The ploughman and his wife do not know it , but this poor old man is Merlin . “ That good woman will have her wish , ” he thinks . II . A Very Small Boy Not long after that , the ploughman’s wife has a baby . It is a boy ! But he is a very strange boy . He is very , very small . He is no bigger than his father’s thumb . “ Look at our little son , ” says the mother . The father comes to the bed . He holds up his thumb next to the baby . “ He is just as big as my thumb , ” he says . “ Not one bit bigger ! ” “ He is just what I wanted , ” says the mother .
