Later , the father goes out to work . The mother sits up in bed . She holds the baby in her hand . She looks at him and looks at him . She cannot stop . Suddenly , the window opens . A lady comes in . She wears a gold crown on her head . It is the queen of the fairies . The mother is afraid . But the fairy queen smiles at her . “ Don’t be afraid , ” says the queen . “ I only want to see your little boy . ” She kisses the baby . “ What a fine little boy , ” she says . “ I will give him a name . His name is Tom Thumb . ” “ Tom Thumb , ” says the mother . “ Yes . That is a good name . ” “ And I will be his fairy godmother , ” says the queen . “ Now , he needs some clothes . ” She calls , and some other fairies come in through the window . The queen tells them what to make , and they start to work . They make Tom a hat from an oak leaf . They make his shirt from a spider’s web . They make his jacket from thistle down . Thistle down is the soft white hair of the thistle flower . They make his trousers from feathers . They make his socks from apple skin . And they tie his socks with an eyelash from his mother’s eye . Last of all , they make his shoes from mouse skin . The soft mouse hair is on the inside , so the shoes are warm . “ There , ” says the fairy queen . “ Now he is ready for the world . ” The mother looks at her little son in his new clothes . She laughs with joy . “ Thank you , ” she says . But when she looks up , the fairies are gone . Only little Tom is there , in his mother’s hand . III . The Cherry Stones Tom Thumb gets older , but he does not get bigger . He is always as small as his father’s thumb . But he is very clever . His head is full of ideas and tricks . When Tom is old enough , he plays with the other boys in the village . They like to play a game with cherry stones . A cherry stone is the hard little ball in the middle of a cherry . Every boy has a bag of cherry stones . When you win , you get more stones . When you lose , you give your stones to the other boys . Tom is not very good at the game . Soon he has no cherry stones . “ Oh well , ” says Tom to himself . “ I know a trick . ” The boys do not look at their bags . They only look at the game . So Tom goes very quietly to a bag . He climbs into the bag . Inside , he fills his pockets with cherry stones . Then he climbs out again . Nobody sees him . He goes back to the game with full pockets . He does this again and again . The boys do not know how he does it . But one day , Tom is in a bag again . He is climbing out , with his pockets full of stones . And the boy with that bag looks down . He sees Tom !
