“ Aha ! ” says the boy . “ My little Tommy ! So it is you ! You took my cherry stones . You took them again and again . Now I have you , and you will be sorry ! ” The boy pulls the string at the top of the bag . The bag closes tight , with Tom inside . Then the boy shakes the bag . He shakes it hard , up and down , left and right . Tom hits the cherry stones , and the cherry stones hit Tom . His arms and legs hurt . “ Ow ! Ow ! ” cries Tom . “ Stop ! Please stop ! Let me out ! ” “ Will you take my cherry stones again ? ” asks the boy . “ No , no ! Never again ! ” cries Tom . “ I will never take anything again . I promise ! ” The boy opens the bag , and Tom climbs out . His body is sore all over . He walks home very slowly . IV . The Pudding Soon after that , Tom’s mother makes a pudding for dinner . She puts flour , eggs and milk in a big bowl . Then she mixes them . The mix is thick and yellow . It is called batter . Tom wants to see how she makes the pudding . So he climbs up to the top of the bowl . He looks down into the batter . Then his foot slips ! Down he goes , head first , into the batter . His mother does not see . She mixes and mixes , and Tom goes round and round in the batter . Then she puts all the batter in a cloth bag . Tom is in the bag too . She ties the bag at the top . Then she puts it in a big pot of water on the fire . Slowly , the water gets hot . Tom wants to shout , but he can’t . His mouth is full of batter . So he kicks . He kicks and kicks . The pudding jumps up and down in the pot . His mother looks at the pot . Her eyes go very big . “ What is this ? ” she cries . “ The pudding is moving ! There is magic in it . Bad magic ! ” She takes the pudding out of the pot . She runs to the door , and she throws the pudding out onto the road . Just then , a tinker walks past the house . A tinker is a man who goes from house to house . He mends old pots and pans . This tinker is very poor . “ A pudding ! ” he says . “ And nobody wants it . I will take it . ” He picks up the pudding and puts it in his bag . Then he walks off down the road . Inside the tinker’s bag , Tom gets the batter out of his mouth . Now he can shout . And he shouts very loudly . “ Hey ! Hey ! Let me out ! ” The tinker stops . He looks around . There is nobody on the road . Then he hears it again . It comes from his bag . “ A pudding that can talk ! ” cries the tinker . He is very afraid . He takes the pudding out of his bag and throws it down on the road . Then he runs away as fast as he can . The pudding breaks into pieces . Tom climbs out . He is yellow with batter from head to toe . He walks all the way home .
