His mother sees him at the door . “ Oh , Tom ! My poor boy ! ” she cries . “ What happened to you ? ” “ I fell into your pudding , Mother , ” says Tom . “ And then a tinker took me away in his bag ! ” “ Oh , my poor darling , ” says his mother . “ So there was no bad magic . It was you ! ” She is very sorry . She puts Tom in a teacup of warm water , and she washes off all the batter . Then she kisses him and puts him to bed . V . The Red Cow A few days later , Tom’s mother goes out to milk her cow . The cow is red , and she eats grass in the field . Tom goes with his mother . It is a very windy day . “ Tom , ” says his mother , “ you are so small . The wind can blow you away . I will tie you to that thistle . ” His mother takes a long , fine thread . She ties one end to the thistle and the other end to Tom . “ There , ” she says . “ Now the wind can’t blow you away . Stay here , and I will milk the cow . ” Tom stands next to the thistle . His oak - leaf hat moves in the wind . The red cow looks at Tom’s hat . She likes it . It is green and nice , like good food . She puts her head down . She opens her big mouth . And in one bite , she takes the thistle into her mouth . And Tom goes in too ! The cow chews and chews . Her teeth are very big . Tom is very afraid . “ Mother ! Mother ! ” he shouts , as loud as he can . His mother looks up . She can’t see Tom anywhere . “ Where are you , Tommy ? ” she calls . “ My dear Tommy , where are you ? ” “ Here , Mother ! ” shouts Tom . “ In the red cow’s mouth ! ” His mother begins to cry . She holds her hands together . “ Oh no ! Oh no ! ” she cries . “ What can I do ? ” The cow stops chewing . She hears a strange noise in her throat . She does not like it at all . So she opens her mouth , and Tom falls out . But his mother is fast . She catches him in her apron . So Tom does not fall on the hard ground , and he is not hurt . She puts him inside her dress , close to her heart . Then she runs home with him as fast as she can . VI . The Raven and the Fish Tom’s father has a job for his little son . He makes Tom a whip . He makes it from a piece of barley straw . “ Now you can help me with the cows , ” says his father . Tom goes out into the fields with his whip . He feels big and strong .
