Just then , a big black raven flies over the field . It sees something small in the furrow . Down it comes . It picks Tom up in its beak , and up it goes again . “ Put me down ! ” shouts Tom . “ Put me down ! ” But the raven does not put him down . It flies over fields and hills . Then it flies over the sea . And there , over the sea , the raven opens its beak . Tom falls down , down , down . He falls into the water with a splash . At that moment , a big fish comes by . It opens its mouth . And it takes Tom in , all in one bite ! Now Tom is inside the fish . It is very dark in there . “ Oh dear , ” says Tom . “ First a pudding . Then a cow . And now a fish ! ” Soon after that , some men go out to sea in a boat . They catch fish with a big net . And one of the fish in the net is Tom’s fish . It is a very fine fish , big and fat . So the men take it to the court of King Arthur . The king’s cook buys it for the king’s table . In the king’s kitchen , the cook opens the fish . He wants to cook it for dinner . And what does he find inside ? A little boy ! “ Look at this ! ” cries the cook . “ Thank you ! ” says Tom . “ It was very dark in there . I am so happy to be free again ! ” “ And he can talk ! ” says the cook . “ We must take him to the king . ” VII . At King Arthur’s Court The cook carries Tom to the king . King Arthur sits in his great hall . The queen sits next to him . The Knights of the Round Table are there too . “ Your Majesty , ” says the cook , “ look what I found in a fish . ” He puts Tom down on the table . The king looks at Tom . The queen looks at Tom . All the knights look at Tom . “ Who are you , little man ? ” asks the king . “ My name is Tom Thumb , Your Majesty , ” says Tom . And he bows very low . “ Tom Thumb , ” says the king . “ A good name for you ! Well , Tom Thumb , stay here with us . You can live at my court . ” So Tom stays at the court of King Arthur . Soon , everybody likes him . Tom knows lots of tricks and games . He jumps and dances on the king’s table . He stands on his head . He plays games with the knights . The king laughs . The queen laughs . All the Knights of the Round Table laugh too . When the king goes out on his horse , he often takes Tom with him . Tom sits on the king’s hand , or on the horse’s head . One day , it begins to rain . “ Oh no , ” says the king . “ Tom , you will get very wet . ” “ Don’t worry , Your Majesty , ” says Tom . “ I know what to do . ” And he climbs into the pocket of the king’s waistcoat . It is warm and dry in there . Tom closes his eyes and goes to sleep . When the rain stops , he climbs out again . After that , every time it rains , Tom sleeps in the king’s pocket .
