VIII . A Present for Home One day , King Arthur has a question for Tom . “ Tell me , Tom , ” says the king . “ What about your mother and father ? Are they as small as you ? ” “ Oh no , Your Majesty , ” says Tom . “ They are as tall as anybody here at court . ” “ And are they rich ? ” asks the king . “ No , Your Majesty , ” says Tom . “ They are not rich . They are poor people . ” The king thinks for a moment . Then he picks Tom up . “ Come with me , ” he says . The king takes Tom to his treasury . The treasury is the room where the king keeps all his money . “ Tom , ” says the king , “ take some money home to your mother and father . Take as much as you can carry . ” Tom jumps and dances with joy . “ Oh , thank you , Your Majesty ! Thank you ! ” he says . “ But wait . First I need a purse . ” Tom runs off . Soon he comes back with a purse . It is made of a water bubble . In the treasury , Tom gets a silver threepenny coin . It is a very small coin . But for Tom , it is very big and very heavy . He puts the coin in his purse . Then he tries to put the purse on his back . It is very hard . He tries again and again . At last , the purse is on his back , and it feels right . And off he goes . The way is long , and the coin is heavy . Tom walks a little , and then he rests . He rests more than a hundred times . But nothing bad happens to him on the way . He walks for two days and two nights . At last , he comes to his father’s house . He is so tired ! He can hardly stand . His mother sees him from the window . She runs out of the house . “ Tom ! Tom ! You are home ! ” She picks him up and carries him into the house . “ Mother , I live at the court of King Arthur now , ” says Tom . “ And look ! The king sent you and Father a present . ” He opens his purse . There is the silver coin . “ Silver ! ” says his mother . “ From the king ! ” Tom stays at home with his mother and father for a short time . He tells them all about the raven , the fish , and the court . But soon he goes back to the court of King Arthur . IX . Sir Thomas and His Mouse Tom’s clothes are not new any more . The batter in the pudding was bad for them . The inside of the fish was bad for them too . Now they are old and dirty . “ Tom , you need new clothes , ” says the king . “ And I have another idea . From today , you are a knight . You are Sir Thomas Thumb . And every knight needs a horse . But you are too small for a horse . So you will have a mouse ! ” A fairy comes to the court to make the new clothes . He is very good with a needle . He makes Tom a shirt from the wings of a butterfly . He makes his boots from chicken skin . And for a sword , Tom has a needle at his side .
