I . A King Who Loves Gold This is a story from long , long ago . There is a king , and his name is Midas . He is very rich . He has a big palace and a lot of gold . King Midas has a little daughter . Her name is Marygold . She has pink cheeks and brown hair in little curls . When she smiles , there is a small dimple in her chin . She plays and laughs all day around her father’s chair . Midas loves gold more than anything in the world . He loves his crown , but only because it is gold . Does he love anything more than gold ? Maybe one thing : his little daughter . But the more he loves Marygold , the more gold he wants . He has a foolish idea . “ I want to give my daughter a big pile of gold , ” he thinks . “ The biggest pile in the world ! That is the best present for her . ” So all day , he thinks about gold . In the evening , Midas looks at the sky . The sun goes down , and the clouds are gold . “ Oh , why can’t those clouds be real gold ? ” he says . “ Then I can put them in my strong box . ” One day , Marygold runs to him . She has some little yellow flowers from the field in her hand . “ Look , Father ! ” she says . “ Flowers for you ! ” “ Pooh , pooh , child ! ” says Midas . “ They are only yellow . They are not real gold . Now , gold flowers , those are good flowers ! ” Long ago , Midas loved flowers . He made a big garden with the biggest and sweetest roses in the world . He sat there for hours and looked at them . The roses are still there . But now Midas only looks at them and thinks , “ How much money is this garden worth ? What if every petal is a thin piece of gold ? Then it is worth a lot ! ” Long ago , Midas loved music too . Now he only likes the sound of gold coins . Clink , clink , clink ! For Midas , that is the best music in the world . He often takes Marygold on his knee . “ You are worth your weight in gold , my child ! ” he says . That is his way to say , “ I love you very much . ” II . The Treasure Room King Midas grows more and more foolish . Soon he doesn’t even like to look at things that are not gold . So every day , he goes down under his palace . There is a dark room there with thick stone walls . It is almost like a prison . This is his treasure room , full of gold . Midas goes in and locks the door with a big key . Now he is alone with his gold . These are his happiest hours . The room has only one small window , high up in the wall . A thin line of sunlight comes in through it . Midas likes this sunlight for one reason only . It makes his gold shine . He brings a bag of gold coins into the sunlight and counts them . “ One , two , three , four . . . ” he says . “ Ninety - nine , one hundred ! Ah , lovely ! ”
