The stranger’s smile gets very , very big . It fills the room like the sun . “ The Golden Touch ! ” he says . “ That is a clever idea , friend Midas . But are you sure ? Will it make you happy ? ” “ Of course it will ! ” says Midas . “ And you will never be sorry ? ” “ Sorry ? How can I be sorry ? ” asks Midas . “ I want nothing more . ” “ Then it is yours , ” says the stranger . He waves goodbye . “ Tomorrow , when the sun comes up , you will have the Golden Touch . ” Then the stranger gets very , very bright . Midas closes his eyes . When he opens them again , the stranger is gone . There is only the thin line of yellow sunlight . And all around him , his gold shines . IV . The Golden Morning That night , Midas is like a little child the night before a birthday . He waits and waits for the morning . Very early , before the sun is up , Midas is awake . He puts out his hand and touches the chair next to his bed . Nothing happens . The chair is still wood . He touches the little table . Nothing . Midas is very sad . “ Was it only a dream ? ” he thinks . “ Or was the stranger playing a game with me ? ” He lies in bed , and he gets sadder and sadder . Outside , the sky is still grey . Then the first ray of sunlight comes in through the window . It shines on the white cover of the bed , but in a strange way . Midas looks closely . The cover is not white ! It is gold , bright , pure gold ! “ The Golden Touch ! ” cries Midas . “ It came with the sun ! ” He jumps out of bed and touches everything . He takes hold of one of the posts of his bed . At once , it is a gold post . He pulls open the window curtain . The little tassel on it gets heavy in his hand . It is gold . He picks up a book from the table . At first , it looks like a fine old book with gold edges . Then he opens it . The pages are thin plates of gold ! He can’t read a word of it now . He puts on his clothes quickly . Now he has a suit of gold cloth ! It is still soft , but it is very heavy . Then he takes out his handkerchief . Marygold made it for him . She sewed the edges with her own little hands . Now the handkerchief is gold too . Her small , neat stitches are gold thread . Midas does not like this very much . He remembers the day she climbed on his knee and gave it to him . But it is only a small thing . Next , he puts his glasses on his nose . He wants to see all his new gold very well . But he can’t see through them ! He takes them off . The glass in them is yellow metal now . They are worth a lot of money , but they are no good as glasses . “ Hmm , ” thinks Midas . “ I am the richest man in the world . But I will never have good glasses again . ” Then he laughs . “ Well , it is not important , ” he says . “ Every good thing comes with a small problem . My eyes are fine for most things . And Marygold is growing up . Soon she will be old enough to read to me . ”
