I . The First Story : The Poor Shoemaker In a small town there lives a shoemaker . He makes shoes for people . He works hard every day , and he is a good and honest man . He lives with his wife in a little house . His shop is in the same house . But times are bad . It is not his fault , but he gets poorer and poorer . Soon he has no money at all . He has only one piece of leather . Leather is the skin of an animal . People make shoes and bags from it . One evening he looks at his leather for a long time . “ This is my last piece of leather , ” he says to his wife . “ It is only enough for one pair of shoes . ” His wife sits down next to him . She looks at the leather too . “ Only one pair ? ” she asks . “ Only one , ” says the shoemaker . “ After that , we have nothing . ” “ What will we do ? ” she asks . “ I don’t know , ” he says . “ But I will make these shoes . Then we will see . ” He takes his knife , and he cuts the leather with care . He cuts out all the parts for two shoes . He puts the parts on his work table . “ I am tired now , ” he says . “ I will sew the shoes tomorrow morning . ” The shoemaker is poor , but he never does bad things to other people . So his heart is calm , and he is not afraid . He lies down in his bed . He says a prayer to God , and he closes his eyes . Soon he is asleep . II . Shoes in the Morning In the morning the shoemaker gets up . He says his morning prayers . Then he goes to his table . He wants to start work . But he stops . He cannot believe his eyes . On the table there are two shoes . They are not pieces of leather now . They are new shoes , and they are ready ! “ Wife ! ” he calls . “ Come here ! Look at this ! ” His wife runs into the room . “ Shoes ! ” she says . “ Did you get up in the night and make them ? ” “ No , ” says the shoemaker . “ I slept all night . I didn’t make them . ” He takes the shoes in his hands . He looks at them very closely . He turns them round and round . Every stitch is small and neat . A stitch is one short line of thread . In these shoes there is not one bad stitch . “ These are very good shoes , ” he says . “ They are better than my shoes . Only a great master makes shoes like these . ” “ Who is our helper ? ” asks the wife . “ Is it a friend ? Is it a neighbour ? ” “ A friend does not come in the night , ” says the shoemaker . “ And nobody in this town sews like this . ” He puts the shoes in the window of his shop . Soon a man comes in . “ Good morning , ” says the man . “ I need some new shoes . Oh ! Can I see those shoes in the window ? ” He tries the shoes on . They are just right for him . He walks up and down the shop .
