“ These are very fine shoes ! ” he says . “ How much are they ? ” The shoemaker tells him the price . “ That is not enough for shoes like these , ” says the man . “ Here . I want to pay more . ” He gives the shoemaker a lot of money . Then he goes away in his new shoes . The shoemaker counts the money . His wife counts it too . “ Look ! ” she says . “ With this money you can buy leather for two pairs of shoes ! ” III . More and More Shoes That day the shoemaker buys new leather . In the evening he cuts out two pairs of shoes . He puts all the parts on his table . “ Tomorrow I will get up early , ” he says to his wife . “ Then I will sew all four shoes . ” He goes to bed happy . Tomorrow there is work for him again . But in the morning there is no work for him . The two pairs of shoes are on the table . They are ready , and they are very fine again . That day two buyers come into the shop . “ What fine shoes ! ” says the first buyer . “ I want this pair . ” “ And I want that pair , ” says the second buyer . “ Here is my money . ” They like the shoes very much , and they pay well . Now the shoemaker has money for more leather . He can buy leather for four pairs of shoes . In the evening he cuts out four pairs . In the morning four pairs of new shoes stand on the table . And so it goes on , day after day . Every evening the shoemaker cuts out the leather . Every morning the shoes are ready . And every day people come to buy them . People in the town talk about his shoes . “ Do you know the shoes from the little shop ? They are the best shoes in town ! ” “ Yes ! And they are so soft and so strong ! ” Soon the shoemaker is not poor . There is good food on the table . There is wood for the fire . His wife has a warm new dress , and he has a new coat . After some time he is even a rich man . Every evening the wife asks the same question . “ Who makes our shoes ? Who is our helper ? ” And every evening the shoemaker gives the same answer . “ I don’t know , wife . But I am very thankful . ” IV . Who Helps Us ? Winter comes . It is cold outside , and it is nearly Christmas . One evening the shoemaker cuts out his leather as always . Then he sits down by the fire with his wife . “ Wife , ” he says , “ what do you think ? Shall we stay up tonight ? Then we can see our helper . ” “ Yes ! ” says his wife . “ That is a good idea . I want to know too . ” She lights a candle . Then they look round the room . Where can they hide ? In one corner of the room some clothes hang on the wall . “ Behind the clothes , ” says the wife quietly . “ Nobody can see us there . ”
