So they stand behind the clothes , and they wait . They wait for a long time . The house is very quiet . The shoemaker’s legs get tired . His wife nearly falls asleep . The candle burns lower and lower . Then it is midnight . Suddenly two little men come into the room . They are very , very small . They have nice little faces . But they have no clothes at all . They have no shirts , no coats and no shoes . The two little men sit down at the shoemaker’s table . They take the pieces of leather , and they start to work . Stitch , stitch , stitch ! They sew with little needles . Tap , tap , tap ! They hit the shoes with little hammers . Their fingers are very small , but they are very fast . The shoemaker cannot take his eyes off them . The little men do not stop . They do not rest . They work and work . At last all the shoes are ready . They stand in a line on the table . Then the two little men jump down . They run out quickly , and in a moment they are gone . The shoemaker and his wife come out from behind the clothes . “ Did you see that ? ” asks the wife . “ I saw it , ” says the shoemaker . “ Two little men ! So they make all our shoes ! ” “ But who are they ? ” asks the wife . “ I don’t know , ” says the shoemaker . “ But they are good little men . They help us , and they want nothing for it . ” V . Presents for the Little Men The next morning the shoemaker and his wife eat their breakfast . The wife is thinking about the little men . “ Husband , ” she says , “ the little men made us rich . We must thank them . We must show them that we are grateful . ” “ Yes , ” says the shoemaker . “ But how ? ” “ Did you see them ? They have no clothes , ” she says . “ They run about with nothing on . It is winter now . They must be very cold . ” “ That is true , ” says the shoemaker . “ I know what I will do , ” says his wife . “ I will make them some little clothes . I will sew two little shirts and two little coats . I will make two little waistcoats and two pairs of trousers . And I will knit a pair of stockings for each of them . ” “ That is very kind , ” says the shoemaker . “ And you , husband , ” she says , “ please make them two little pairs of shoes . ” The shoemaker smiles . “ I will be very glad to do that , ” he says . So they start work . Every day the wife sits by the window with her needle and her wool . She sews and she knits . The shirts are white , and the coats are warm . The trousers are no longer than her hand . The shoemaker takes his best and softest leather . He makes two pairs of very small shoes . He holds them up and he laughs . “ Look at them ! ” he says . “ They are like shoes for a doll ! ” One day the shoemaker picks up one of the little coats . “ Are the clothes too big ? ” he asks . “ No , ” says his wife . “ I saw the little men , and I know how big they are . The clothes are just right . ” At last , one evening , everything is ready . That night the shoemaker does not cut out any leather . He and his wife put the presents on the table . They put out the shirts , the coats , the waistcoats , the trousers , the stockings and the little shoes . Then they stand behind the clothes in the corner again , and they wait .
