VI . The Little Men Dance Away At midnight the two little men come in again . They run and jump into the room . They are ready to work , as always . But on the table there is no leather . There are only the little clothes . The little men stop . They look at the clothes . They look at each other . At first they do not understand . Then their faces light up . They laugh , and they clap their little hands . They are very , very happy . Quickly they put on the clothes . They put on the shirts and the trousers . They put on the waistcoats and the coats . They put on the stockings and the shoes . Everything is just right for them . Then they sing a happy song . “ Now we are fine boys , as you see ! Why should we shoemakers be ? ” They dance round the table . They jump over the chairs and the benches . They dance and skip and jump all round the room . Behind the clothes , the shoemaker and his wife watch them , and they smile . At last the little men dance to the door , and they dance out into the night . The shoemaker and his wife come out of the corner . The room is quiet again . “ Did you see their faces ? ” asks the wife . “ They were so happy ! ” “ Yes , ” says the shoemaker . “ Our presents were just right . ” “ Will they come back tomorrow ? ” asks the wife . “ I don’t know , ” says the shoemaker . After that night the little men never come back . But the shoemaker does not forget them . As long as he lives , everything goes well for him . Everything he does is a success . VII . The Second Story : A Letter for the Servant Girl Here is another story about the little people . In this story they are called elves . In another town there is a poor servant girl . A servant works in the house of other people . This girl works for a man and his wife . They are her master and her mistress . The girl works hard , and she likes to keep things clean . Every day she sweeps the house with her broom . Then she takes the dirt outside . She puts it on the big heap in front of the door . One morning she goes out with the dirt as always . She wants to go back to her work . But then she sees something on the heap . It is a letter ! The girl picks it up . But she cannot read . So she puts her broom in the corner , and she takes the letter to her master and mistress . “ I found this letter outside , ” she says . “ What does it say ? ” Her master opens the letter and reads it . He is very surprised .
