“ This letter is from the elves , ” he says . “ They have a new baby . Soon there will be a christening . That is a special day for a new baby . On that day the baby gets its name . ” “ But why do they write to me ? ” asks the girl . “ The elves want you to be the baby’s godmother , ” says the master . “ On the day of the christening , you must hold the baby . ” “ Me ? ” says the girl . “ But I am only a servant girl . I don’t know what to do . ” Her master and mistress talk to her for a long time . “ It is a great honour , ” says her master . “ But the elves are not people like us , ” says the girl . “ I am afraid of them . ” “ Don’t be afraid , ” says her mistress . “ They want to be your friends . You must go . You cannot say no to an invitation like this . It is not right . ” The girl thinks and thinks . At last she says yes . VIII . In the Hollow Mountain Soon three elves come to the house . “ Come with us , ” they say to the girl . They take her to a mountain . The mountain is hollow . It is empty inside , like a big house under the rocks . The little people live there . There are many elves inside , and they are all very glad to see the girl . Everything in the mountain is small . But everything is very fine and very pretty . It is more beautiful than words can say . The baby’s mother lies in a bed of black wood . There are white pearls on the bed . The covers have gold thread on them . The baby’s little bed is made of white ivory . And the baby’s bath is made of gold ! Then the christening begins . All the little elves stand round the baby . The girl holds the baby in her arms . The baby is very small and very sweet . It looks up at her with its little eyes . Now she is its godmother . Then she wants to go home . “ Thank you , ” she says to the elves . “ Now I must go home . I have work to do . ” “ Oh , no ! Please stay with us ! ” say the little elves . “ Stay for three days ! ” They ask her again and again . So the girl stays . The three days are happy days . The elves do everything they can to make her happy . They eat and laugh and dance together . The time goes very fast . At last the girl starts for home . But first the elves fill her pockets with money . They fill them right to the top . “ Thank you for everything ! ” says the girl . “ Goodbye ! ” “ Goodbye , godmother ! ” say the elves . Then they take her out of the mountain .
