X . The Cat and the Cow She goes on a little way , and she meets a cat . So she says : “ Cat ! Cat ! Kill the rat ! The rat will not bite the rope . The rope will not tie up the butcher . The butcher will not kill the ox . The ox will not drink the water . The water will not put out the fire . The fire will not burn the stick . The stick will not beat the dog . The dog will not bite the pig . Piggy will not go over the stile , and I will not get home tonight . ” The cat looks at her . Then the cat says : “ Go to that cow over there , and bring me a saucer of milk . Then I will kill the rat . ” At last ! The old woman is very happy . So away she goes to the cow . But the cow says to her : “ Go to that haystack over there , and bring me a handful of hay . Then I will give you the milk . ” So away goes the old woman to the haystack . She takes a handful of hay , and she brings it to the cow . The cow eats the hay . Then she gives the old woman the milk . The old woman puts it in a saucer , and away she goes with it to the cat . The cat drinks up the milk . And then it all begins . The cat begins to kill the rat . The rat begins to bite the rope . The rope begins to tie up the butcher . The butcher begins to kill the ox . The ox begins to drink the water . The water begins to put out the fire . The fire begins to burn the stick . The stick begins to beat the dog . The dog begins to bite the pig . And the little pig is so afraid that he jumps over the stile ! Then they all stop . So the old woman gets home that night after all . And her little pig goes home with her . XI . Story Three : The Cat and the Mouse Here is one more old story . It is very short , and it is a lot like the story of the old woman and her pig . A cat and a mouse play in the malt - house . A malt - house is a big building . People keep grain in it . They run and jump . They play all day . But the cat plays too hard and bites off the mouse’s tail ! The poor little mouse looks back . She has no tail now . “ Please , Puss , ” she says , “ give me my tail . ” “ No , ” says the cat . “ I will not give you your tail . First go to the cow and bring me some milk . ” First the mouse jumps , and then she runs , till she comes to the cow . And this is what she says : “ Please , Cow , give me milk . Then I can give the cat milk , and the cat will give me back my tail . ”
