XI . Story Four : The Husband Who Was to Mind the House Here is one more tale about a man and his wife . But this man is not like Gudbrand . There is a man who is always cross . He never thinks his wife does anything right in the house . It is summer , and it is time to cut the hay . One evening the man comes home from the hayfield . He is very cross . He shouts at his wife . “ Dear , do not be so angry , ” says his wife . “ Tomorrow let’s change our work . I will go out to the field with the men and cut the grass . And you can mind the house . ” To mind the house is to look after it and do the work there . The husband thinks this is a very good idea . “ Yes ! ” he says . “ I will do that . ” So early the next morning , the wife takes a scythe and goes out to the field . A scythe is a big , long knife for grass . And the husband stays at home . First of all , he wants to make butter . He puts cream into the churn . A churn is a tall wooden pot . You beat the cream in it with a long stick . Then you have butter . He works at the churn for a while . Then he gets thirsty . So he goes down to the cellar for some beer . He opens the big beer barrel . Now he must put the tap in . Just then he hears a noise in the kitchen above him . It is the pig ! The pig is in the kitchen . “ Oh no ! The churn ! ” he says . He runs up the steps with the tap in his hand . But he is too late . The churn is on its side . The cream is all over the floor . And the pig is in the middle of it . The man is very , very angry . He forgets about the beer . He runs after the pig . He catches it at the door . Then he gives it a big kick . The pig falls down , and it lies very still . Then the man looks at his hand . The tap is in his hand , not in the barrel ! He runs down to the cellar . But it is too late . There is no beer in the barrel now . It is all on the floor . XII . The Cow on the Roof The man goes into the dairy . There he finds some more cream . He puts it in the churn , and he begins again . They must have butter for dinner . He works at the churn . Then he remembers the cow . The cow is still in the cowshed . She has no food and no water in there . And the sun is high in the sky now . “ The field is too far , ” he thinks . “ But there is grass on our roof . ” This house has an old grass roof . A lot of good grass grows on it . The back of the house is very near a steep hill . So the man puts a long board from the hill to the roof . “ The cow can go up the board , ” he thinks .
