The fast , cold water takes the troll away . It takes him far , far down the river . And he never comes back to his bridge again . Big Billy Goat Gruff shakes his head . Then he goes over the bridge and up to the hillside . There he finds the other two goats . And all three billy goats eat the long green grass . They eat and eat , day after day . They get very , very fat . They can hardly walk home again . And maybe they are still fat today . Snip , snap , snout . This tale’s told out . V . Story Two : The Cat on the Dovrefell Here is another tale from the north . There are trolls in this one too . Far in the north of Norway there is a land called Finnmark . It is very cold there . A man lives in Finnmark . One day he catches a big white bear . “ This is a fine bear , ” says the man . “ I will take it to the king of Denmark . ” So the man and the white bear set off . They walk for a long time . The days are short . The nights are long and cold . At last they come to the Dovrefell . The Dovrefell is a place of high hills in Norway . It is Christmas Eve . The man sees a little house . A man called Halvor lives there with his family . The man with the bear knocks at the door . “ Good evening , ” he says to Halvor . “ May I sleep in your house tonight ? I have my bear with me . ” Halvor shakes his head . “ I am sorry , ” he says . “ We cannot give a bed to anyone now . Every Christmas Eve , a lot of trolls come to our house . So we must go out . Tonight we have no roof over our own heads . ” “ Oh , is that all ? ” says the man . “ Then let me have your house tonight . My bear can lie under the stove over there . And I can sleep in the little side room . ” “ But the trolls ! ” says Halvor . “ Please , ” says the man . “ We are very tired , and it is very cold . ” He asks again and again . At last Halvor says yes . VI . Sausage for the Cat Halvor and his family get everything ready for the trolls . They put food on the tables . There is rice porridge , and there is fish . There are sausages and a lot of other good things . It is a big Christmas dinner . Then the family goes out into the cold night . The man goes into the little side room . And the white bear lies down under the stove . Soon the trolls come down to the house . Some trolls are big , and some are small . Some have long tails , and some have no tails at all . Some have long , long noses . They all come in and sit down at the tables . The trolls eat and drink . They try every dish on the table . They make a lot of noise . Then one of the little trolls sees the white bear . The bear is lying very still under the stove . The little troll thinks it is a cat . What a big white cat !
