The little troll puts a bit of sausage on a fork . He goes to the stove . He pushes the sausage up to the bear’s nose . “ Pussy , pussy ! ” he says . “ Do you want some sausage ? ” The white bear does not want sausage . It gets up . It stands up tall , and it growls a big , loud growl . The trolls jump up from the tables . The bear runs at them . It chases them all out of the house , big and small . Out they run into the snow , and away they go . In the morning , Halvor and his family come home . The trolls are not there . The man and his bear say goodbye . They go on their way to the king of Denmark . VII . Seven Kittens A year goes by . It is Christmas Eve again . In the afternoon , Halvor goes out into the wood . He wants to cut some wood for the holidays . He thinks , “ Tonight the trolls will come again . ” Halvor is hard at work with his axe . Then he hears a voice in the wood . “ Halvor ! Halvor ! ” calls the voice . Halvor stops his work . “ Well , ” he says , “ here I am . ” It is a troll . Halvor cannot see him , but he can hear him . “ Have you still got your big cat ? ” asks the troll . Halvor thinks for a moment . Then he smiles . “ Yes , I have , ” says Halvor . “ She is lying at home under the stove . And now she has seven kittens too . They are much bigger than she is . And they are much angrier too ! ” “ Oh ! ” calls the troll . “ Then we will never come to see you again ! ” And the troll keeps his word . The trolls never come to Halvor’s house for Christmas dinner again . VIII . Story Three : Gudbrand on the Hillside Here is a tale about a man and his wife . There is a man called Gudbrand . He has a farm far , far away on a hillside . So people call him Gudbrand on the Hillside . Gudbrand and his wife are very happy together . They understand each other very well . Everything Gudbrand does is good in his wife’s eyes . The farm is their own . They have two cows in the cowshed . And they have a hundred dollars at the bottom of a big wooden box . One day his wife says to Gudbrand , “ You know , dear , I think we should sell one of our cows . Then we will have some money in our hands , like other people . ” “ And the hundred dollars in the box ? ” asks Gudbrand . “ Oh , we must not touch them , ” says his wife . “ And what do we want with two cows ? One cow is enough for me . Then I only have to feed one cow , not two . ” Gudbrand thinks his wife is very wise . “ You are right , ” he says . “ I will take the cow to town today . ” So he sets off with the cow . The road to town is long . But in town , nobody wants to buy his cow . “ Well , well , never mind , ” says Gudbrand . “ I can go back home with my cow . I have a cowshed for her . ” So he begins to walk home with his cow .
