I . A World with No Trouble This story is very , very old . It is about a time thousands of years ago , when the world is still young . In those days , everybody in the world is a child . There are no mothers and fathers . Nobody needs them . There is no danger and no trouble of any kind . Food grows on the trees . Is a child hungry ? He goes to a tree and takes his dinner from it . In the morning , a tree has a new flower on it . That flower is tonight’s supper . In the evening , a tree has a small new bud . That bud is tomorrow’s breakfast . Nobody works . There are no lessons to learn . The children play and dance all day long . They talk and sing like birds , and they laugh and laugh . The children never fight . They never cry . Not one child ever sits alone in a corner , cross and sad . Oh , what a good time to be alive ! Why is the world so happy ? Because there are no Troubles in it yet . Troubles are ugly little things with wings . Today there are almost as many Troubles as mosquitoes . But in those days , nobody has ever seen one . In this happy world , there is a little boy called Epimetheus . He has no father or mother , like all the other children . He lives in a small cottage . But he is not alone for long . One day , a little girl comes from a far country to live with him . She has no father or mother either . She is going to be his friend and helper . Her name is Pandora . Pandora walks into the cottage and looks around . The first thing she sees is a big box . And almost the first thing she says is a question . “ Epimetheus , what is in that box ? ” “ My dear little Pandora , ” says Epimetheus , “ that is a secret . Please don’t ask any questions about it . Somebody left the box here , and I must keep it safe . I don’t know what is inside . ” “ But who gave it to you ? ” asks Pandora . “ And where did it come from ? ” “ That is a secret too , ” says Epimetheus . Pandora pushes out her lip . “ Oh , that is not fair ! ” she says . “ I wish this big ugly box was far away ! ” “ Come on , don’t think about it , ” says Epimetheus . “ Let’s run outside and play with the other children . ” II . Always the Box Now Pandora has the biggest problem of any child in the world . She wants to know the secret of the box , and she can’t . At first , it is a very small problem , like a little shadow . But every day it gets bigger . Soon their cottage is not as sunny as the other cottages . “ Where did the box come from ? ” Pandora says again and again . “ And what is inside it ? ” “ Always this box ! ” says Epimetheus one day . He is very tired of it . “ Dear Pandora , please talk about other things . Come , let’s go and pick some figs . We can eat them under the trees for supper . And I know a place with the sweetest grapes in the world . ”
