III . The Face on the Lid Now Pandora is alone with the box . She stands and looks at it . She has called it ugly more than a hundred times . But really , it is a very pretty box . It is made of dark wood , so smooth and bright that Pandora can see her face in it . She has no mirror , so that is a good thing about the box . It is strange that she doesn’t love it for that . Around the edges of the box , there are pictures cut into the wood . There are men and women , and the prettiest children in the world . They play and rest among flowers and leaves . But once or twice , Pandora thinks she sees an ugly , unkind face there , behind the leaves . She looks again and touches the place with her finger . No , it is only a pretty face . She saw it from the side . In the centre of the lid , there is one more face . It is the most beautiful face of all . It has flowers all around its head . Pandora has looked at this face many , many times . She thinks the mouth can smile or be serious , like a real mouth . The face looks happy and a little naughty . It looks like it wants to speak . What does it want to say ? Maybe something like this : “ Don’t be afraid , Pandora ! Why not open the box ? Forget poor , silly Epimetheus . You are cleverer than him , and much braver . Open the box , and you will find something very pretty ! ” There is no lock on the box . There is a gold cord around it , with a knot . And what a knot ! It has no end and no beginning . The cord goes in and out , again and again . Nobody’s fingers can undo a knot like that . But because it is so difficult , Pandora wants to look at it more . Two or three times , she has held the knot between her finger and thumb . But she has not really tried to undo it . “ I think I can see how it was made , ” she says to herself . “ Maybe I can undo it and then tie it again . That is not wrong , is it ? Even Epimetheus won’t be angry about that . And I don’t need to open the box . I won’t open it without a yes from that silly boy . ” IV . Nothing to Do Maybe Pandora needs some work . Then she won’t think about the box all day . But life in those days is too easy . The children have too much free time . They can’t play hide - and - seek all day long . There is almost no work to do . A little cleaning in the cottage , some fresh flowers in a vase , and Pandora’s work is finished . And then , for the rest of the day , there is the box ! Maybe the box is good for her in a way . It gives her lots to think and talk about . When she is happy , she looks at its bright sides and all the pretty faces . When she is cross , she pushes it . Sometimes she kicks it with her naughty little foot . The box gets a lot of kicks . But it is a bad box , as we will soon see . It deserves every one .
