What about you , my little reader ? Think of a big box in your house . Maybe there are Christmas presents in it . You are alone with the box . Do you want to lift the lid ? Of course you do ! But you don’t do it . No , no ! Well , only one little look , maybe ? Pandora doesn’t think there are toys in the box . In those days , there are no toys . The whole world is one big toy for the children . But Pandora is sure that there is something lovely inside . She wants to look very much , like any child . And today , she can’t wait any longer . She walks over to the box . She is almost ready to open it . Oh , naughty Pandora ! First , she tries to lift it . But it is heavy , much too heavy for a small girl . She lifts one end a little and lets it fall . Thump ! Then she thinks she hears something inside the box . She puts her ear to the box and listens . Yes ! There is a quiet sound inside , like soft voices . Or is it only a sound in her ears ? Is it her heart ? Pandora is not sure . But now she wants to know more than ever . V . The Golden Knot Pandora looks at the gold knot again . “ A very clever person tied this knot , ” she says . “ But I think I can untie it . I want to find the two ends of the cord , at least . ” She takes the knot in her fingers and looks at it very closely . She does not really plan it . But soon she is busy with it . Sunshine comes in through the open window . Pandora hears the other children far away . They are playing and laughing . Maybe Epimetheus is with them . Pandora stops and listens . What a lovely day it is ! Maybe it is better to leave the knot . She can forget the box and run outside to her friends . But all this time , her fingers are still busy with the knot . She looks at the face on the lid . It is smiling at her , a sly little smile . “ That face looks naughty , ” thinks Pandora . “ Is it smiling because I am doing a bad thing ? Oh , I want to run away ! ” But just then , she turns the knot a little . And the gold cord comes undone by itself , like magic ! Now nothing is holding the lid . “ How strange ! ” says Pandora . “ What will Epimetheus say ? How can I tie it again ? ” She tries once , then twice . It is too difficult . The knot came undone so quickly , and now she can’t remember how it looked . She must leave the box like this and wait for Epimetheus . “ But when he sees the knot , he will know I did it , ” says Pandora . “ And he will think I looked in the box . How can I show him I didn’t ? ” Then a bad idea comes into her naughty little heart . “ He will think I looked in the box anyway , ” she thinks . “ So why not look ? ” Oh , very naughty , very silly Pandora ! Don’t think about Epimetheus . Think about what is right !
