But the face on the lid looks at her in such a friendly way . And now she hears the small voices again , clearer than before . Are they real ? She can’t tell . “ Let us out , dear Pandora ! Please let us out ! We want to be your friends , and we will play with you . Only let us out ! ” “ What is it ? ” thinks Pandora . “ Is something alive in the box ? Well , yes , I will take one quick look . Only one ! Then I will close the lid again , safe and tight . One little look can’t hurt anybody ! ” VI . Flowers for Pandora But now let’s see what Epimetheus is doing . Epimetheus is playing without Pandora today . Nothing goes well . He can’t find one sweet grape or one good fig . Some figs are hard and green . Others are too soft and much too sweet . ( Epimetheus has only one fault : he likes figs a little too much . ) He doesn’t laugh , and he doesn’t sing . The other children don’t understand . “ What is wrong with Epimetheus ? ” they ask . Epimetheus doesn’t know either . In those days , being happy is normal for everybody . Nobody has ever been ill . Soon Epimetheus sees that he is stopping all the fun . So he goes home to Pandora . She is not very happy today either , just like him . But he wants to make her happy . So on the way , he picks lots of flowers . There are roses and lilies and orange blossom , and many more . He makes the flowers into a crown for her head . All this time , a big black cloud is growing in the sky . Epimetheus comes to the door of the cottage . Just then , the cloud moves over the sun . Suddenly everything is dark and sad . Epimetheus goes in very quietly . He wants to walk up behind Pandora and put the flowers on her head . But he doesn’t need to be quiet . He can make as much noise as an elephant . Pandora won’t hear him . Her hand is on the lid of the box . She is just about to open it ! Epimetheus sees her . One shout from him , and she will stop . But Epimetheus doesn’t shout . Why not ? Well , he doesn’t say much about it . But he wants to know the secret too . “ Pandora is going to find out what is inside , ” he thinks . “ Why only Pandora ? I want to know too ! And if there are pretty things in the box , half of them are mine . ” So Epimetheus is just as silly as Pandora . When we are cross with Pandora , we must be cross with Epimetheus too . VII . The Troubles Pandora lifts the lid . The cottage is very dark now . The black cloud covers all of the sun . There is a low sound in the sky . Then , all at once , there is loud thunder . Boom ! But Pandora doesn’t hear it . She lifts the lid high and looks inside . Suddenly , lots of little things with wings fly past her , out of the box . At the same moment , she hears Epimetheus . He is crying out in pain . “ Oh , it stung me ! ” he cries . “ It stung me ! Naughty Pandora ! Why did you open this bad box ? ”
