A sweet little voice speaks from inside . “ Only lift the lid , and you will see . ” “ No , no ! ” says Pandora , and she begins to cry again . “ No more lifting the lid for me ! You are in the box , you naughty thing , and there you will stay ! Lots of your ugly brothers and sisters are flying about the world now . I am not that silly now . I will never let you out ! ” She looks at Epimetheus . Maybe he will say , “ Good , Pandora ! That is very wise . ” But the cross boy only says quietly , “ You are wise a little too late . ” “ Ah , ” says the sweet little voice . “ Please let me out . I am not like those naughty things with stings in their tails . They are not my brothers and sisters . Come , my pretty Pandora ! I know you will let me out ! ” The voice is happy and warm . It is very hard to say no to it . With every word , Pandora’s heart feels a little lighter . Epimetheus is still in his corner . But now he turns half round , and he looks a little happier too . IX . The Lid Again “ My dear Epimetheus , ” says Pandora , “ did you hear this little voice ? ” “ Yes , of course I did , ” says Epimetheus . He is still cross . “ So what ? ” “ Shall I lift the lid again ? ” asks Pandora . “ Do what you like , ” says Epimetheus . “ You did a lot of harm today . Maybe you want to do a little more . There are so many Troubles out there now . One more won’t make a big difference . ” “ Please speak a little more kindly ! ” says Pandora quietly . She wipes her eyes . The little voice in the box laughs . “ Ah , naughty boy ! ” it says . “ He really wants to see me , and he knows it ! Come , my dear Pandora , lift the lid . I want to help you , and I am in a hurry . Just give me some fresh air . Then you will see . Things are not as bad as you think ! ” Pandora stands up . “ Epimetheus , ” she says , “ I don’t care what happens . I am going to open the box ! ” “ The lid looks very heavy , ” cries Epimetheus , and he runs across the room . “ I will help you ! ” The two children put their hands on the lid , and together they lift it . X . Hope Out flies a small , bright person with a happy smile . She flies around the room , and there is light everywhere she goes . Have you ever played with a little mirror in the sun ? The light dances into dark corners . She is like that light . She flies to Epimetheus . With one finger , she touches the place where the Trouble stung him . At once , the pain is gone . Then she kisses Pandora on the forehead , and Pandora’s pain goes too . The bright little stranger flies happily over their heads . She looks at them so sweetly . “ Maybe opening the box was not so bad after all , ” the children think . “ This kind little friend was in there too . Now she is free . ” “ Who are you , lovely little thing ? ” asks Pandora .
