I . The Princess and the Pea : A Knock at the Gate This is an old story about a prince . He wants to get married , but not to just any girl . He wants a real princess . So the prince travels all over the world to find one . He goes to big countries and small countries . He meets a lot of princesses on the way . But how can he know if a princess is real ? That is very hard . Each one has something that is not quite right . “ Is she a real princess ? ” he asks himself every time . “ I am not sure . ” At last he comes home again . He is tired and sad . “ Did you find a princess ? ” asks the old King . “ I met a lot of princesses , ” says the prince . “ But I did not find a real one . ” One evening there is a terrible storm . There is thunder and lightning . The rain pours down , and the streets are full of water . Suddenly someone knocks at the city gate . Knock , knock , knock ! The old King takes a lamp and goes down to open it . A girl is standing outside in the rain . And oh , what a sight she is ! Water runs down from her hair and her clothes . It runs into the toes of her shoes and out again at the heels . “ Good evening , ” says the girl . “ May I come in ? I am a princess . ” “ A princess ? ” says the King . He looks at her wet hair and her wet dress . “ Are you sure ? ” “ Yes , ” she says . “ I am a real princess . ” The King brings her inside to the fire . The old Queen looks at the girl . She says nothing . She only thinks , “ A real princess ? We will soon find out ! ” The Queen goes into the bedroom . She takes all the sheets and blankets off the bed . Then she puts one little pea at the bottom of the bed . Next she puts twenty mattresses on top of the pea . On top of the mattresses she puts twenty soft feather beds . Now the bed is very , very high . “ Here is your bed , my dear , ” says the Queen . “ Sleep well . ” The princess climbs up to the top of the bed . She lies down there and closes her eyes . II . The Princess and the Pea : A Bad Night In the morning the storm is over . The sun is shining . The princess comes down to breakfast . She looks very tired . “ Good morning , my dear , ” says the Queen . “ How did you sleep ? ” “ Oh , very badly ! ” says the princess . “ I could not sleep all night . ” “ Why not ? ” asks the Queen . “ Was the bed not soft ? ” “ I do not know what was in that bed , ” says the princess . “ But I was lying on something hard . It was terrible ! Now I am black and blue all over . ” The Queen smiles . She looks at the King , and the King looks at the prince . “ Now we know , ” says the Queen . “ She is a real princess ! ” “ How do you know ? ” asks the prince .
