“ Yes , but do not tell anyone , ” says the princess . “ I am the Emperor’s daughter . ” “ Of course we will not tell ! ” they all say . They all think that the swineherd is only a swineherd . Nobody knows that he is a prince . And he does not waste a day . Soon he makes a rattle . Turn it round , and it plays every dance tune there is . It plays all the dances from the very first day of the world until now . “ Oh , how lovely ! ” says the princess as she walks past . “ I have never heard such lovely music ! My ladies can give him the rest . ” “ Oh , but we do not want to kiss him ! ” say the ladies . “ Nonsense ! ” says the princess . “ If I can kiss him , you can too . Remember , I give you food and work . ” So the lady goes down again . “ A hundred kisses from the princess , ” says the swineherd , “ or we each keep our own things . ” “ Stand in front of me , ” says the princess . The ladies stand around her , and the kissing begins . X . The Swineherd : The Sixty - Eighth Kiss The Emperor comes out on his balcony . He sees a crowd down by the pigs . “ What is going on there ? ” he asks . He rubs his eyes and puts on his glasses . “ The ladies are playing some game , I think . I must go down and see . ” His old shoes are loose at the heels . He pulls them up . Then he goes down very quickly . In the yard he walks very softly . The ladies do not see him . They are busy counting the kisses . It must all be fair ! There must not be too many kisses or too few . The Emperor stands on his toes and looks over their heads . “ What is this ? ” he cries . His daughter is kissing the swineherd ! The Emperor takes off his shoe and hits them both on the head with it . It happens just at the sixty - eighth kiss . He is very angry . “ Go away ! ” he shouts . “ I do not want to see you again ! ” He sends the princess and the swineherd out of his country . Now the princess stands on the road and cries . The swineherd is cross with her . And the rain pours down . “ Oh , poor me ! ” says the princess . “ Why did I not say yes to the prince ? Oh , how unhappy I am ! ” The swineherd goes behind a tree . He wipes the paint off his face and takes off his old clothes . Then he steps out in the fine clothes of a prince . He looks so handsome that the princess bows to him .
