“ I put a pea in her bed , ” says the Queen . “ Then I put twenty mattresses and twenty feather beds on top of it . And she felt that little pea through all of them ! ” Only a real princess can feel a pea like that . Nobody else has such soft skin . The prince is very happy . Now he knows that she is a real princess . He takes her for his wife , and there is a big wedding . And the pea ? They put it in the museum . You can still see it there today , if nobody has taken it . And that is a true story . III . The Brave Tin Soldier : A Soldier With One Leg In a box there are twenty - five tin soldiers . They are brothers , because they all come from one old tin spoon . They wear red and blue uniforms . They hold their guns on their shoulders and look straight ahead . One day someone takes the lid off the box . “ Tin soldiers ! ” cries a little boy . He claps his hands . These are the first words that the soldiers hear in the world . It is the boy’s birthday . The soldiers are his present . He stands them on the table . The soldiers all look the same , but one is different . He has only one leg . He was made last . There was not enough tin for two legs . But he stands on one leg as well as the others stand on two . This story is about him . There are other toys on the table too . The best is a paper castle with little windows . In front of it , little trees stand around a small mirror . The mirror is the castle’s lake . Little wax swans swim on it . But the prettiest thing is a little lady at the door of the castle . She is made of paper too . She has a thin dress and a blue ribbon over her shoulder . On the ribbon there is a shiny rose . It is as big as her face . The little lady is a dancer . She holds out her arms and lifts one leg very high . It is so high that the soldier cannot see it . He thinks that she has only one leg , like him . “ She is the wife for me ! ” he thinks . “ But she lives in a castle . I live in a box with twenty - four brothers . That is no place for her . Still , I want to meet her . ” He lies down behind a small box on the table . From there he can watch the dancer . She stands on one leg , and she never falls . Evening comes . The boy puts the other soldiers back in their box , and the people of the house go to bed . Now the toys begin to play . They visit each other . They play at war , and they have a dance . The soldiers in the box want to play too . But they cannot open the lid ! The nutcracker jumps , and the pencil runs across the table . The canary wakes up and begins to talk in poems ! Only the tin soldier and the dancer do not move . She stands on her toes . He lies still behind the box . He never takes his eyes off her . At twelve o’clock the lid of the small box flies open . It is a trick box . Out jumps a little black goblin ! “ Tin soldier ! ” says the goblin . “ Do not look at things that are not for you ! ” The soldier does not answer . “ Very well , ” says the goblin . “ Just wait until tomorrow ! ”
