IV . The Brave Tin Soldier : A Boat Made of Paper In the morning the children put the tin soldier in the window . Suddenly the window flies open . Is it the goblin , or is it the wind ? Nobody knows . But the soldier falls out , down from the third floor . He lands on his head , with his one leg up in the air . His helmet and his gun are stuck between the stones of the street . The maid and the little boy run down to look for him . Once they almost step on him , but they do not see him . He can shout , “ Here I am ! ” Then they will find him . But he does not shout . He is in uniform . A soldier in uniform does not shout for help . Then it begins to rain . The rain gets harder and harder . When it stops , two boys come down the street . “ Look , a tin soldier ! ” says one of them . “ He needs a boat ! ” They make a boat from a newspaper and put the soldier in it . Then they put the boat in the water by the street . The water carries it away . The boys run next to it and clap . Oh , what big waves ! How fast the water runs ! The paper boat goes up and down and round and round . The tin soldier shakes , but his face does not change . He looks straight ahead . He holds his gun on his shoulder . V . The Brave Tin Soldier : The Rat and the Fish Suddenly the boat goes into a long drain under the street . It is as dark there as in his box . “ Where am I going now ? ” thinks the soldier . “ This is the goblin’s fault , I am sure . Oh , I want the little dancer here with me in the boat ! With her , the dark is nothing . ” Then a big water rat comes out . It lives in the drain . “ Have you got a pass ? ” asks the rat . “ Show me your pass ! ” The tin soldier says nothing . He only holds his gun more tightly . The boat goes on . The rat swims after it . Oh , how it shows its teeth ! It shouts to the bits of wood and straw in the water . “ Stop him ! Stop him ! He has not paid ! He has not shown his pass ! ” But the water runs faster and faster . Now the soldier can see daylight at the end of the drain . He can hear a terrible noise too . It is loud enough to make a brave man afraid . At the end of the drain the water falls into a big canal . For a little tin soldier , it is like a great waterfall .
