The boat cannot stop now . The poor soldier stands as straight as he can . He does not even close his eyes . He wants everyone to see that he is not afraid . The boat turns round three or four times . It fills with water and begins to sink . The water comes up to the soldier’s neck . The wet paper gets soft . At last the water closes over his head . The tin soldier thinks of the little dancer . He will never see her again . Now he hears an old song about a brave soldier . The soldier in the song goes away and never comes back . Then the paper boat falls to pieces . The tin soldier goes down into the water . At once a big fish comes and swallows him ! Oh , how dark it is inside the fish ! It is darker than the drain . There is less room too . But the tin soldier is still brave . He lies there with his gun on his shoulder . The fish swims here and there . At last it lies very still . VI . The Brave Tin Soldier : Home Again Suddenly there is a light like lightning . Then it is day , and someone cries out . “ Look ! It is the tin soldier ! ” A man caught the fish and sold it at the market . The cook of the house bought it . Now she is cutting it open in the kitchen with a big knife . And there is the tin soldier ! The cook carries him into the room . Everyone wants to see this soldier who travelled inside a fish . But the tin soldier is not proud . They put him on the table . Oh , how strange the world is ! It is the same room . There is the window he fell from . There are the same children and the same toys . There is the paper castle , with the little dancer at the door . She is still standing on one leg . She is as brave and as steady as he is . He is so glad to see her that he almost cries tin tears . But he does not let them fall . He looks at her , and she looks at him . They say nothing . Then one of the little boys throws the tin soldier into the stove . Why ? The boy has no reason . It must be the goblin in the box again . The fire is all around the soldier . It is very hot . Is it the heat of the fire , or the heat of love ? He does not know . The bright colours of his uniform are gone . Did the water wash them away , or did his sadness take them ? Nobody can say . He looks at the little dancer , and she looks at him . He feels that he is melting . But he still stands straight , with his gun on his shoulder . Then the door opens , and the wind comes in . It picks up the little dancer . She flies like a fairy into the stove , next to the tin soldier . There is a bright flame , and she is gone . The tin soldier melts into a little lump of tin . The next morning the maid takes the ashes out of the stove . In the ashes she finds a little tin heart . That is all that is left of the tin soldier . Of the dancer there is only her shiny rose . It is burnt as black as coal .
