VII . The Swineherd : A Rose and a Nightingale This story is about a poor prince . His kingdom is very small , but it is big enough for a wife . And he wants a wife . He wants to marry the Emperor’s daughter . It is very bold of him to ask her . But everyone knows his name . Hundreds of princesses are ready to say yes to him . What will the Emperor’s daughter say ? Let us see . On the grave of the prince’s father there is a rose bush . It is the most lovely rose bush in the world . It flowers only once every five years . Even then , there is only one rose . But what a rose ! It smells so sweet that you forget all your troubles . The prince also has a nightingale . Oh , how it sings ! All the sweet songs of the world are in its little throat . The prince puts the rose and the bird in two big silver boxes . He sends them to the princess . The Emperor’s servants carry the boxes into the big hall . The princess is there with her ladies . They are playing a game called “ Visitors Are Coming ” . The princess sees the boxes . She claps her hands with joy . “ Oh , I hope it is a little kitten ! ” she says . But in the first box there is the rose bush with the lovely rose . “ Oh , how pretty ! How well it is made ! ” say all the ladies . “ It is more than pretty , ” says the Emperor . “ It is lovely . ” The princess touches the rose and almost cries . “ Oh , Papa , how awful ! ” she says . “ Nobody made it . It is only a real rose ! ” “ Oh , how awful ! ” say all the ladies . “ It is only a real rose ! ” “ Let us open the other box first , ” says the Emperor . “ Then we can be angry . ” The servants take out the nightingale . It sings so sweetly that nobody can say a bad word about it . The ladies say a few words in French . They all speak French , and they all speak it badly . An old man of the court speaks to the Emperor . “ Our dear Empress had a music box , ” he says . “ She is dead now , but I remember it well . This bird sounds just like it ! ” “ Yes , it does , ” says the Emperor . He begins to cry like a little child . “ I hope it is not a real bird , ” says the princess . “ Yes , it is a real bird , ” say the men with the boxes . “ Then let it fly away , ” says the princess . And she does not want to see the prince at all .
