VIII . The Swineherd : The Pot With the Little Bells But the prince does not give up . He paints his face brown and black . He puts on old clothes and pulls his cap down low . Then he goes to the palace . “ Good day , Emperor , ” he says . “ Have you got any work for me ? ” “ So many people want work here , ” says the Emperor . “ I have nothing for you now . But wait ! I need someone to look after my pigs . I have got a lot of pigs . ” So the prince becomes the Emperor’s swineherd . A swineherd is a man who looks after pigs . He lives in a small , dirty room next to the pigs . He works there all day . By evening he has made a pretty little pot . There are little bells all around the top . When the water in the pot boils , the bells play an old song . It is a song about a happy old pig and her three little pigs . And that is not all . Put your finger in the steam . Now you can smell the dinner on every fire in the town ! That is much more wonderful than a rose . One day the princess walks past with her ladies . She hears the song and stops . She looks very pleased , because she can play this song too . In fact , it is the only song she can play . She plays it with one finger . “ That is my song ! ” she says . “ This swineherd must be a clever man . Go and ask him the price of the pot . ” One of the ladies has to go . First she puts on wooden shoes , because of the mud . “ What do you want for your pot ? ” asks the lady . “ Ten kisses from the princess , ” says the swineherd . “ Oh , no ! ” says the lady . “ I cannot sell it for less , ” says the swineherd . The lady goes back to the princess . “ Well , what did he say ? ” asks the princess . “ I cannot say it out loud ! ” says the lady . “ Then say it quietly in my ear . ” So the lady says it quietly in her ear . “ How rude ! ” says the princess . She walks away . But after a few steps , the bells ring again . They play the old song so sweetly ! “ Go and ask him , ” says the princess . “ Will he take ten kisses from my ladies ? ” “ No , thank you , ” says the swineherd . “ Ten kisses from the princess , or I keep my pot . ” “ How annoying ! ” says the princess . “ But you must all stand in front of me . Nobody must see . ” The ladies stand in front of her and hold out their long dresses . The princess gives the swineherd ten kisses . And she gets the pot . IX . The Swineherd : A Hundred Kisses Oh , what fun ! The water in the pot boils all day and all night . Soon the ladies know what is cooking on every fire in the town . They know about the rich lord’s kitchen . They know about the poor shoemaker’s kitchen too . They dance and clap their hands . “ We know who is having soup and pancakes ! ” they say . “ We know who is having porridge and meat ! How interesting ! ” “ Very interesting , ” says the oldest lady of the court .
