II . The White Pebbles Early the next morning , before the sun came up , the woman woke the two children . “ Get up , you lazy things ! ” she shouted . “ We’re going into the forest to get wood . ” She gave each of them a small piece of bread . “ This is for your lunch , ” she said . “ Don’t eat it before then , because you won’t get anything else . ” Hansel’s pocket was full of stones , so Gretel carried both pieces of bread under her apron . An apron is a piece of cloth that you wear over your clothes to keep them clean . Then the whole family set off for the forest together . The air was cold , and the grass was wet . The birds were not singing yet . After a short walk , Hansel stopped and looked back at the house . A little later he did it again , and then again and again . “ Hansel , what are you looking at ? ” his father asked . “ Why are you staying behind ? Pay attention , and don’t forget how to use your legs ! ” “ Oh , Father , ” said Hansel , “ I’m looking at my little white cat . It’s sitting on the roof , and it wants to say goodbye to me . ” “ Silly boy ! ” said the woman . “ That isn’t your cat . It’s the morning sun shining on the chimney . ” But Hansel was not really looking at a cat . Every time he stopped , he took a white pebble out of his pocket and dropped it quietly on the path . Nobody noticed . The path went deeper and deeper into the forest , between tall dark trees . When they reached the middle of the forest , the father stopped . “ Now , children , collect some wood , ” he said . “ I’ll light a fire , so you won’t be cold . ” Hansel and Gretel collected a lot of dry sticks . Soon their pile was as high as a little hill . The father lit it , and the flames rose high into the air . Then the woman spoke . “ Now , children , lie down by the fire and rest , ” she said . “ We’re going into the forest to cut wood . When we’ve finished , we’ll come back and get you . ” Hansel and Gretel sat down by the fire . At midday each of them ate their little piece of bread . They could hear the sound of an axe not far away . “ That’s our father , ” they thought . “ He’s near us . He’s cutting wood . ” But it was not their father’s axe . The father had tied a branch to an old dead tree . The wind was blowing the branch backwards and forwards , and it was hitting the tree . That was the sound they heard . The children waited for a long time . They were so tired that their eyes closed , and they fell fast asleep . When at last they woke up , it was already dark . Strange noises came from the forest all around them .
