Gretel began to cry . “ How can we get out of the forest now ? ” she asked . But Hansel comforted her . “ Just wait a little , until the moon comes up , ” he said . “ Then we’ll find the way . You’ll see . ” At last the full moon rose , big and round . Hansel took his little sister by the hand , and they walked from pebble to pebble . The white stones were shining like new silver coins , and they showed the children the way . “ You see , Gretel ? ” said Hansel . “ The pebbles are taking us home . ” Gretel was not crying any more . She held her brother’s hand and watched the ground very carefully , because she did not want to miss a single stone . They walked all night long . At sunrise they came to their father’s house and knocked at the door . The woman opened it . When she saw Hansel and Gretel , she said , “ You naughty children ! Why did you sleep so long in the forest ? We thought you were never coming back ! ” But the father was very happy . It had hurt his heart terribly to leave them alone in the forest . He put his arms around his children and said nothing , but his eyes were full of tears . III . The Breadcrumbs Not long after that , hunger came to the land once again . One night the children heard the woman talking to their father . “ Everything is eaten , ” she was saying . “ We have half a loaf left , and after that there’s nothing . The children must go . This time we’ll take them much deeper into the forest , so they won’t find their way out again . There’s no other way to save ourselves . ” The father’s heart was heavy . “ It would be better to share the last bite with my children , ” he thought . But the woman did not want to listen to anything he said . She shouted at him and said many unkind things . He had said yes the first time , so now he could not say no . Once you give in , it is hard to stop . The children were still awake , and they heard everything . They lay very still in their beds . When the grown - ups were asleep , Hansel got up again . He wanted to go out and pick up pebbles , like the first time . But the woman had locked the door , and Hansel could not get out . Still , he comforted his little sister . “ Don’t cry , Gretel , ” he said . “ Go to sleep now . God will help us . ” Early in the morning the woman came and pulled the children out of their beds . She gave each of them a piece of bread , but this time it was even smaller . On the way into the forest , Hansel broke his bread into crumbs inside his pocket . Crumbs are very small pieces of bread . Every now and then he stopped and threw a crumb on the ground . “ Hansel , why do you keep stopping and looking back ? ” his father asked . “ Keep walking . ”
