“ I’m looking at my little pigeon , ” Hansel answered . “ It’s sitting on the roof , and it wants to say goodbye to me . ” “ Nonsense ! ” said the woman . “ That isn’t your pigeon . It’s the morning sun on the chimney . ” But little by little , Hansel threw all his crumbs on the path . This time the woman took the children much further into the forest . They came to a part of the forest where they had never been before . The trees were so tall that they could hardly see the sky . Again the grown - ups made a big fire . “ Just sit here , children , ” said the woman . “ If you’re tired , you can sleep for a while . We’re going to cut wood . In the evening , when we’ve finished , we’ll come and get you . ” At midday Gretel broke her bread in two . “ Here , Hansel , ” she said . “ Half is for you . ” Hansel thanked her , because he had no bread left . It was all lying on the path . Then the children fell asleep by the fire . The afternoon passed , and the evening came and went . But nobody came for the poor children . When they opened their eyes , it was the middle of the night . Hansel comforted his sister again . “ Wait until the moon comes up , Gretel , ” he said . “ Then we’ll see the crumbs of bread that I dropped . They’ll show us the way home . ” When the moon came up , they set off . But they did not find a single crumb . Thousands of birds lived in the forest and the fields , and they had eaten them all . “ Don’t worry . We’ll soon find the way , ” Hansel said to Gretel . But they did not find it . IV . The House of Bread and Cake The children walked all night , and all the next day from morning until evening . But they could not get out of the forest . “ Where are we , Hansel ? ” Gretel asked many times . “ I don’t know , ” he answered . “ But don’t be afraid . I’m sure we’ll find a path soon . ” They were very hungry . The only food they found was two or three berries that were growing on the ground . “ Hansel , I can’t go on , ” Gretel said at last . “ My feet hurt so much . ” Hansel was very tired too . When they could not walk another step , they lay down under a tree and fell asleep . Now it was the third morning since they had left their father’s house . They started walking again , but they only went deeper and deeper into the forest . If help did not come soon , they were going to die of hunger and tiredness . At midday they saw a beautiful bird on a branch . It was as white as snow , and it was singing so sweetly that the children stopped to listen . When the bird finished its song , it opened its wings and flew on in front of them . The children followed it until they came to a little house . The bird landed on the roof . When the children came closer , they could not believe their eyes . The walls of the little house were made of bread , and the roof was covered with cake . The windows were made of sugar , and they were as clear as glass .
