“ Let’s eat ! ” said Hansel . “ Today we’re going to have a good meal . I’ll eat a piece of the roof , and you , Gretel , can eat some of the window . I’m sure it tastes sweet . ” Hansel reached up and broke off a little piece of the roof to see how it tasted . Gretel stood by the window and began to nibble the sugar glass . To nibble means to eat something in very small bites , like a mouse . Suddenly a soft voice called from inside the house , “ Nibble , nibble , little mouse , who is nibbling at my house ? ” The children answered , “ Only the wind , the wind , the wind from the sky . ” Then they went on eating and did not worry at all . Hansel liked the taste of the roof very much , so he pulled down a big piece of it . Gretel pushed out a whole round window . She sat down on the ground and ate it happily . Suddenly the door opened . A very , very old woman came slowly out of the house . She was walking on crutches , two long sticks that helped her to walk . Hansel and Gretel were so frightened that they dropped the food from their hands . But the old woman nodded and smiled at them . “ Oh , you dear children ! ” she said in a sweet voice . “ Who brought you here ? Come in , come in and stay with me . Nothing bad will happen to you here . ” She took them both by the hand and led them into her little house . There she gave them a wonderful meal : milk and pancakes with sugar , and apples and nuts . The children ate until they were full . They had not eaten so well for many days . Afterwards the old woman made two pretty little beds for them with clean white sheets . Hansel and Gretel lay down in them and thought they were in heaven . V . The Witch But the old woman was only pretending to be kind . In truth , she was a wicked witch , and she was always waiting to catch children . She had built the little house of bread only to bring them to her . When a child fell into her hands , she cooked it and ate it , and for her that was a very special day . Witches have red eyes and cannot see far . But they have a very good sense of smell , like animals , and they know when people are coming near . So when Hansel and Gretel came near her house , the witch already knew . She laughed an ugly laugh and said to herself , “ I have them now ! This time they won’t get away ! ” Early in the morning , before the children woke up , the witch was already out of bed . She looked at them for a long time as they slept . How pretty they were , with their round red cheeks ! “ What a tasty little meal ! ” she said quietly .
