VII . The Oven Very early the next morning , Gretel had to hang up the big pot of water and light the fire under it . “ First we’ll bake some bread , ” said the old woman . “ I’ve already heated the oven , and the dough is ready . ” Dough is the soft mix of flour and water that becomes bread . She pushed poor Gretel out to the oven . Big flames were already coming out of it . “ Climb in , ” said the witch , “ and see if it’s hot enough . Then we can put the bread in . ” But the witch had a plan . She wanted to shut the oven door when Gretel was inside . Then she was going to bake the girl and eat her too . Gretel understood what the witch was thinking . “ I don’t know how to do it , ” she said . “ How do I get in ? ” “ Silly goose ! ” said the old woman . “ The door is big enough . Look , even I can get in ! ” She crept up to the oven and put her head inside . Then Gretel gave her a hard push , and the witch fell deep into the oven . Gretel quickly shut the iron door and pushed the bolt across . A bolt is a piece of metal that keeps a door closed . Oh , how terribly the witch screamed in there ! But Gretel ran away , and the wicked witch died in the fire of her own oven . Gretel ran like lightning to the stable and opened the door . “ Hansel , we’re saved ! ” she cried . “ The old witch is dead ! ” Hansel jumped out like a bird when someone opens its cage . How happy the two children were ! They hugged each other , danced around and kissed each other . Now there was nobody to be afraid of , so they went into the witch’s house and looked everywhere . In every corner there were old boxes . When the children opened them , they saw that they were full of pearls and jewels . “ These are much better than pebbles ! ” said Hansel . He filled his pockets with as many as he could . “ I want to take something home too , ” said Gretel , and she filled her apron . “ But now we must go , ” said Hansel . “ We need to get out of the witch’s forest . ” VIII . The White Duck After walking for two hours , they came to a wide river . “ We can’t get across , ” said Hansel . “ I can’t see a plank or a bridge . ” A plank is a long , flat piece of wood . “ And there’s no boat either , ” Gretel answered . “ But look , there’s a white duck swimming over there . If I ask her , she’ll help us across . ” Then she called out , “ Little duck , little duck , white as snow , Hansel and Gretel have nowhere to go . There’s no plank and there’s no bridge in sight . Please take us across on your back so white ! ” The duck swam to them . Hansel sat on her back at once and told his sister to sit next to him .
