I . The New Family Once upon a time there was a gentleman who lived in a big house in the town . His wife died , and some years later he married again . His new wife was the proudest woman in the whole country . She was cold and hard , and she thought only of herself . She had two daughters from her first husband . They were just like their mother in everything : in their ideas , in their words and in their bad temper . The gentleman also had a daughter of his own . She was a young girl , sweet and kind , just like her mother . Everyone said that her mother was the best person in the world . There was a big party for the wedding , with music and good food . From that day , the new wife was the girl’s stepmother . A stepmother is your father’s new wife . And the stepmother’s two daughters were now the girl’s sisters too . But the party soon ended , and the new lady of the house quickly showed what she was really like . From the very first day , she did not like her husband’s daughter . The girl was good , gentle and pretty . Next to her , the stepmother’s own daughters looked even worse . And that was something she could never forgive . Her two daughters got the best rooms in the house . They were large , lovely rooms with fine wooden floors and beds in the newest fashion . On the walls there were mirrors so big that the sisters could see themselves from head to foot . But the gentleman’s daughter had to sleep at the very top of the house . Up there , under the roof , there was a small , cold room with almost no light . There was no real bed , only an old bag of straw on the floor . The stepmother gave her all the hardest and dirtiest work . The girl washed the plates , the pots and the tables . She cleaned the stairs and the floors of the whole house . She also cleaned the rooms of the stepmother and her daughters . She never had a free moment . Her sisters , on the other hand , did nothing all day . They got up late , looked at themselves in the mirror and talked about dresses . Every morning , the stepmother gave her orders in a hard voice . “ There is dust on this table . Clean it again , ” she said . “ When you finish , wash my daughters ’ clothes . And then go to the kitchen . ” The girl never gave a rude answer . She only said , “ Yes , madam , ” and went back to her work . The poor girl suffered all this in silence . She did not dare to tell her father . She knew that he would only be angry with her . In that house the stepmother gave the orders , and the father always did what his wife wanted .
