II . Cinderella When her work was done , the girl liked to sit in a corner by the fire . She sat down there among the cinders , close to the warm flames . Cinders are the small grey pieces that are left when wood or coal burns . So her clothes and her face were nearly always grey with ash . Soon her sisters gave her a name because of those cinders . The elder sister , Charlotte , called her a very ugly and rude name . We will not repeat it here . The younger sister was not as unkind as Charlotte . She called her Cinderella , and that is the name everyone knows today . Cinderella always wore old clothes . They were torn and dirty . Her sisters wore rich new dresses . But in her poor clothes , Cinderella was a hundred times prettier than they were . The stepmother could see this very well , and so she treated her even worse . Every day Cinderella got up before everyone else , while it was still dark . She lit the fire in the kitchen , brought water from the well and made breakfast for the whole family . From then on , somebody was shouting for her all day long . “ You , girl ! Bring me my breakfast ! ” Charlotte called from her bed . “ Cinderella , my shoes are dirty ! ” shouted the younger sister . “ Girl , the fire is going out ! ” said the stepmother . And Cinderella ran up and down the stairs without stopping . She never said a word against them . She did every job as well as she could , and she always had a kind word for everybody . The sisters often laughed at her . She did not answer them . She just looked down and went on with her work . Sometimes her father saw her in the hall with a broom in her hand . Then he looked the other way . He did not want any trouble with his wife . And Cinderella did not tell him about her troubles , because she knew it was no use . At night , alone in her corner , Cinderella looked at the fire and thought about her mother . She remembered her soft voice and her smile . “ My mother was kind to everyone , ” she thought . “ I want to be like her . ” Then she climbed up to her cold room and lay down on her bag of straw . She was always so tired that she fell asleep at once . III . Dresses for the Ball One day some big news came to the house . The King’s son was going to give a ball at his palace . A ball is a big , grand party with music and dancing . The prince invited all the rich and noble people of the land . The two sisters were invited too , because everybody knew them . They always went to the grandest parties in town . How happy they were ! From that day they could only think about one thing : what to wear . They spent hours looking at dresses , skirts , ribbons and jewels . For Cinderella this meant even more work . She had to wash and iron her sisters ’ white collars and put small , neat folds in them . Many nights she stayed up very late to finish . In the house nobody talked about anything else . “ I will wear my red velvet dress with the French trimming , ” said Charlotte . “ It cost more than all my other dresses . ”
