“ I will only wear my usual skirt , ” said the younger sister . “ But over it I will put on my cloak with the gold flowers . And I will wear my diamond brooch too . There is nothing like it in the whole country ! ” Each sister wanted to be the prettiest girl at the ball . So they sent for the best woman in town to do their hair . She made them tall head - dresses in the latest fashion . They also bought red powder for their cheeks and little black patches from the best shop . In those days fine ladies put small black patches on their faces . They thought it looked very elegant . They asked Cinderella for her opinion too , because she always knew what looked nice . “ What do you think , Cinderella ? Does this necklace look good on me ? ” asked the younger sister . “ And what about me ? Shall I wear the red ribbons or the blue ones ? ” asked Charlotte . Cinderella gave them the best advice she could . “ With the red dress , the blue ribbons are better , Miss Charlotte , ” she said . “ But do not wear too many . Two are enough . ” And to the younger sister she said , “ With that gold cloak , you do not need the necklace . The brooch looks better alone . ” She even offered to do their hair herself . The sisters were very pleased , and they said yes . While Cinderella was doing their hair , the younger sister asked , “ Cinderella , would you like to go to the ball ? ” “ Oh , you are making fun of me , ” said Cinderella . “ A ball is not a place for a girl like me . ” “ You are right , ” said Charlotte , laughing . “ Everyone would laugh at you . Just think of it ! A dirty little cinder girl at the prince’s ball ! ” Any other girl would have done their hair badly , just to pay them back . But Cinderella was good . She did their hair very well , and they looked their best . The sisters were so excited that they ate almost nothing for two days . They wanted to have very thin waists . So they pulled the laces of their dresses as tight as they could . They broke more than twelve of them . And they spent all day in front of the mirror . “ Am I pretty ? ” asked one . “ And me ? ” asked the other . Cinderella did not stop for a moment . “ You , come here ! Another lace is broken ! ” shouted Charlotte . “ Cinderella , there is a button missing on my cloak ! ” shouted the younger sister . And Cinderella ran up and down with a needle and thread all day long . IV . The Fairy Godmother At last the great day came . The two sisters left the house in their finest dresses . “ Goodbye , ” said Charlotte at the door , without looking at her . “ And when we come back , I want to see a clean kitchen . ” Then they drove off to the palace , full of joy . Cinderella watched them as long as she could . When she could not see them any more , she sat down in her corner and began to cry .
