“ Oh yes , Godmother , ” said Cinderella . “ But must I go like this , in these dirty old rags ? ” Her godmother just touched her with her wand . At that moment her old clothes turned into a dress of gold and silver , covered with jewels . Then the fairy gave her a pair of glass slippers , the prettiest in the whole world . They were small and fine , and they shone in the light . Cinderella looked at herself from head to toe . She looked like a real princess ! Cinderella was ready to get into the coach . But first her godmother gave her a very serious warning . “ Listen to me carefully , ” she said . “ You must leave the ball before midnight . If you stay one moment longer , your coach will be a pumpkin again . Your horses will be mice , and your coachman will be a rat . Your footmen will be lizards , and your dress will turn back into your old clothes . ” “ I promise , Godmother , ” said Cinderella . “ I will leave the ball before midnight . ” And off she drove to the palace . She was so happy that she could hardly sit still . V . A Princess at the Palace That night the palace was full of lights and music . Hundreds of candles were burning , and the ladies wore their richest dresses . Suddenly someone ran to tell the King’s son some news . A great princess was just arriving , and nobody knew who she was . The prince hurried out to meet her himself . He gave her his hand and helped her out of the coach . “ Welcome to my palace , ” he said . Then he led her into the great hall , where all the guests were . When they came in , everyone suddenly went quiet . The people stopped dancing , and the violins stopped playing . Everyone wanted to look at the young lady . They had never seen anyone so lovely before . The only sound in the hall was a soft murmur : “ Oh , how beautiful she is ! How beautiful she is ! ” Even the King , old as he was , could not stop looking at her . “ It is a long time since I last saw such a lovely young lady , ” he said quietly to the Queen . All the ladies looked carefully at her dress and her hair . They wanted to have the same things made the next day . But where could they find such fine cloth ? And who could sew so well ? The prince took her to the best seat in the hall . Then he asked her to dance . She danced so well and so lightly that everyone liked her even more . While they were dancing , the prince asked her name . But she only smiled and said nothing . Later there was a fine supper with fruit and sweets . But the young prince did not eat a thing . He only wanted to look at her . He gave her oranges and lemons . In those days they were rare fruits , and they cost a lot of money . Cinderella went and sat down next to her sisters . She was very polite and friendly to them , and she shared the prince’s oranges and lemons with them . The sisters were very surprised . They had no idea that this lady was Cinderella . Why was such a rich and lovely princess so kind to them ?
