“ Please try these oranges , ” said Cinderella with a smile . “ They are a present from the prince . ” “ Thank you very much , my lady ! ” said Charlotte , and her face went red . “ You are very kind ! ” “ Are you enjoying the ball ? ” asked Cinderella . “ Oh yes , my lady ! ” said the younger sister . “ It is the best ball we have ever been to . ” While they were talking , Cinderella heard the clock strike a quarter to twelve . At once she stood up and made a deep curtsy to everyone . A curtsy is a small bow that a lady makes when she bends her knees . Then she left as quickly as she could . The prince followed her to the palace door . “ Why are you leaving so early ? ” he asked . “ There is another ball tomorrow night . Will you come ? ” “ I will come , ” said Cinderella with a smile . And she got into her coach . VI . The Yellow Dress The coach took her home very quickly . Her godmother was waiting for her there . “ Thank you , Godmother ! ” said Cinderella . “ This was the happiest night of my life . And the King’s son wants to see me again tomorrow at the ball . May I go ? ” “ Of course you may , ” said her godmother . “ But do not forget the time . ” Cinderella was still telling her godmother all about the ball when the sisters knocked at the door . She ran to open it and pretended to be very sleepy . She yawned , rubbed her eyes and stretched her arms . “ How late you are ! ” she said . But really she was not sleepy at all . She was much too happy to sleep ! “ You missed a lot tonight , ” said one of the sisters . “ There was not one boring moment at the ball . The most beautiful princess in the world came . She was very kind to us , and she gave us oranges and lemons . ” Cinderella felt a great joy in her heart , but she did not show it . “ She wore a dress of gold and silver , ” said the younger sister . “ Even the King looked at her . And all the ladies wanted a dress like hers . ” Cinderella asked them the name of the princess . They said that nobody knew it . The King’s son was very unhappy about that . “ He would give anything in the world to know who she is , ” they said . Cinderella smiled . “ Was she really so beautiful ? ” she asked . “ How lucky you are ! Could I see her too ? Oh , Miss Charlotte , will you lend me your yellow dress , the one you wear every day ? ” “ What ? ” cried Charlotte . “ Lend my dress to a dirty cinder girl like you ? I would have to be mad ! ” Cinderella expected this answer , and she was very glad to hear it . She only asked for the dress as a joke . If her sister said yes , she would be in real trouble ! For the rest of that night , in her cold little room , Cinderella hardly slept . She thought about the music , the lights of the palace and the prince’s eyes , and she could not wait for the next ball .
