VII . Midnight The next evening the two sisters went to the ball again . And Cinderella went too , thanks to her godmother . This time her dress was even richer than on the first night . When she came into the hall , everyone went quiet again to look at her . The ladies looked at her new dress with envy . The King’s son stayed by her side all evening . He never stopped saying sweet and loving words to her . “ Last night I could not sleep . I could only think about you , ” he said softly . “ Please do not leave so early tonight . ” Again he asked her name , and again she only smiled . Cinderella liked listening to him so much that she forgot her godmother’s warning . They danced , talked and laughed , and the hours flew by . Suddenly the clock began to strike twelve . She thought it was not even eleven yet ! At the first stroke , Cinderella jumped up and ran away , as light and quick as a deer . The prince ran after her , but he could not catch her . As she ran , one of her little glass slippers fell off . She had no time to go back for it . The prince found it on the ground and picked it up very carefully . When Cinderella came out of the palace , her coach was not there any more . She had to go home on foot , running through the dark streets . She arrived home out of breath , with no coach and no footmen . She was wearing her dirty old clothes again . Of all her fine things , she only had one little glass slipper left . It was the one for her other foot . Meanwhile , at the palace , someone went to the guards at the gate . “ Did you see a princess go out ? ” he asked . “ No , sir , ” they answered . “ We only saw a young girl in old , dirty clothes . She looked more like a poor country girl than a fine lady . ” When the two sisters came home from the ball , Cinderella asked them , “ Did you have a nice time ? Was the lovely lady there again ? ” “ Yes , she came again , ” they said . “ But when the clock struck twelve , she ran away . She ran so fast that she lost one of her little glass slippers . It was the prettiest slipper in the world . The King’s son picked it up . And for the rest of the ball he did nothing but look at it . We are sure that he is in love with the lady who owns that slipper ! ”
