VIII . The Glass Slipper The sisters were right . A few days later the King’s son sent men all over the country with trumpets . In every town square , a man from the palace blew his trumpet and called out : “ Listen , everyone ! The King’s son is looking for the owner of this glass slipper . His men will try it on every young lady in the land . The prince will marry the girl whose foot fits the slipper ! ” The prince’s men started with the princesses . Then they tried the slipper on the duchesses , and then on all the ladies of the court . Some had feet that were too big . Others had feet that were too wide . It did not fit anyone . At last one of the prince’s men brought the slipper to the sisters ’ house . The two sisters were waiting for him , very nervous . “ I am sure it is mine , ” said Charlotte . “ I have very small feet . ” “ No , it is mine , ” said the younger sister . “ My feet are even smaller . ” They both did everything they could to push their feet into the slipper . They pushed and pushed , and their faces went red . But it was no use . Cinderella was watching all this from her corner . She knew very well whose slipper it was . “ Can I try it on too ? ” she asked , laughing . Her sisters burst out laughing and made fun of her . “ You ? With those feet covered in ash ? ” said Charlotte . But the man looked at Cinderella carefully . He saw that she was very pretty . “ She has the right to try , ” he said . “ My orders are to try it on every young lady . I must not forget anyone . ” He asked Cinderella to sit down , and he put the slipper on her foot . It went on very easily ! It fitted her exactly , as if someone had made it just for her . “ It is her ! ” said the man , very pleased . The sisters stood there with their mouths open . But they were even more surprised when Cinderella took the other slipper out of her pocket and put it on . Just then her godmother came in . She touched Cinderella’s clothes with her wand . At once her old clothes turned into a dress even finer and richer than her two ball dresses . Now the two sisters finally saw the truth . Cinderella was the lovely princess from the ball ! They threw themselves at her feet . They asked her to forgive them for all the unkind things they had done to her . Cinderella lifted them up and hugged them . She told them that she forgave them with all her heart . She asked them for only one thing : to love her always . Then the prince’s men took her , in her fine new dress , to the young prince . He thought she was more lovely than ever . Now he knew who the princess from the ball was . A few days later they were married , with a great party at the palace . Cinderella was as good as she was beautiful . So she gave her two sisters rooms in the palace . And on that same day she found them two husbands , two great lords of the court . This story teaches us something . Beauty is a great treasure , and everyone admires it . But there is a gift that is worth even more : kindness and grace in the way we treat people . That was the best present from the fairy godmother . With it , a girl from the cinders became a queen .
