II . The House in the Country When they arrived at the little house , the merchant and his three sons started to work on the land . Beauty got up at four o’clock every morning . She cleaned the house and made breakfast for the whole family . At first it was very hard for her , because in the city she never worked with her hands . But after two months she was stronger and healthier than ever before . When her work was done , she read a book or played the harpsichord . A harpsichord is an old kind of piano . Sometimes she sang while she was spinning wool . Her sisters did not know what to do with their time . They did not get out of bed until ten o’clock . Then they walked around all day and did nothing . They talked only about their lovely clothes and their friends in the city . And they complained all the time . One morning Beauty was coming back from the well with a bucket of water . Her sisters were sitting in the sun by the door . “ Beauty , don’t you ever get tired ? ” asked the eldest , and she laughed . “ Sometimes I do , ” said Beauty . “ But work helps me when I feel sad . ” She went into the house , and the two sisters looked at each other . “ Look at our little sister , ” said the second one . “ She is so stupid that she is happy with this miserable life . ” Their good father did not agree . He knew very well that Beauty was better than her sisters , both in her looks and in her heart . He admired her patience and her hard work . Her sisters left all the housework to her , and they laughed at her every day . The family lived like this for about a year . Then a letter came for the father . A ship with his goods on board had arrived safely in port . The two older daughters almost went mad with joy . They were tired of life in the country , and they were sure that they were going back to the city soon . “ At last we are going to be rich again ! ” said the eldest . “ Goodbye , cows and chickens ! ” said the second . Before their father left , they asked him to bring them lots of presents : new dresses , hats , rings and a hundred other pretty things . Beauty did not ask for anything . She thought that all the money from the ship would not be enough to buy what her sisters wanted . “ And what about you , Beauty ? ” asked her father . “ What would you like ? ” “ You are very kind to think of me , ” she answered . “ Please bring me a rose . No roses grow here . ” In fact , Beauty did not care much about roses . But she did not want to look better than her sisters . If she asked for nothing , they would say that she only wanted to look special . The merchant went to the city , but there he had a lot of trouble . Other men said that the goods on the ship belonged to them , and he had to go to court . After a long time and a lot of worry , he got nothing . He started for home as poor as before .
