III . The Palace in the Forest The merchant was only thirty miles from home . He was happy , because soon he was going to see his children again . But in a large forest he lost his way . It was raining and snowing hard . The wind was so strong that it threw him off his horse twice . Night came , and the poor man was afraid . He thought that he was going to die of cold and hunger . Or perhaps the wolves were going to eat him . He could hear them howling all around him . Suddenly he saw a light far away , at the end of a long line of trees . The light came from a great palace . There were lights in every window , from top to bottom . The merchant thanked God and hurried on . But when he got there , he saw nobody at the gate or in the yard . His horse saw an open stable and went in by itself . Inside it found hay and oats , and the hungry animal began to eat . The merchant tied up his horse and walked to the house . There was nobody there either . He went into a large hall . A good fire was burning , and there was a table full of food . But there was only one plate on it . The merchant was wet through from the rain and the snow . He went to the fire to dry himself . “ I hope the master of the house will forgive me , ” he thought . “ I’m sure somebody will come soon . ” He waited for a long time . The clock struck eleven , and still nobody came . In the end he was so hungry that he could not wait any longer . He took a chicken and ate it in two mouthfuls , and he was shaking with fear the whole time . Then he drank a few glasses of wine and felt braver . He left the hall and walked through several large rooms full of fine furniture . At last he found a room with a very good bed . It was after midnight now , and he was very tired . He shut the door and went to sleep . He woke up at ten o’clock the next morning . Next to the bed he found a new suit of clothes . His own clothes , which were old , torn and dirty , were gone . “ This palace must belong to a good fairy , ” he said . “ She has seen my troubles , and she feels sorry for me . ” He looked out of the window . The snow was gone . Instead he saw lovely gardens full of the finest flowers in the world . He went back to the great hall where he had eaten his supper . On a little table there was a cup of hot chocolate . “ Thank you , good Madam Fairy , for my breakfast , ” he said aloud . “ You are very kind to me . ” The good man drank his chocolate and went to find his horse . On the way he passed some rose bushes , and he thought of Beauty’s wish . He picked a branch with several roses on it . At that moment he heard a great noise . A beast was coming towards him , and it was so terrible that he almost fainted .
