“ Why should I cry ? ” answered Beauty . “ Tears are no use . And my father is not going to die because of me . The monster will take one of his daughters , won’t he ? Then I will go . I am glad to go , because I can save my father’s life . That will show him how much I love him . ” “ No , sister , ” said her three brothers . “ We will go and find this monster . We will kill him , or we will die trying . ” “ No , my sons , ” said the merchant . “ The Beast is very powerful . Nobody can fight against him and win . Beauty has a good heart , and her words touch me deeply . But I will not let her die . I am old , and I do not have many years left . I will only lose a few of them . I am only sad because I must leave you , my dear children . ” “ Father , you will not go to that palace without me , ” said Beauty . “ If you go alone , I will follow you . ” They all tried to change her mind , but it was no use . Beauty was going to the palace . Her sisters were secretly pleased , because Beauty’s goodness always made them jealous . The father was so unhappy that he forgot all about the chest of gold . But that night , when he shut the door of his room , he found it next to his bed . He decided not to tell his children about it . If they knew that he was rich again , they would want to go back to the city . And he wanted to stay in the country . He told his secret only to Beauty . She had some news for him too . While he was away , two gentlemen had come to the house . They wanted to marry her sisters . “ Father , please let them marry , ” Beauty said . “ And give them some of the gold for their new life . ” Beauty was so good that she loved her sisters . She forgave them with all her heart for all their unkindness . At last the day came to leave . The two wicked sisters rubbed their eyes with an onion , so that they could cry a few tears . But the brothers cried real tears , and so did the merchant . Only Beauty did not cry , because she did not want to make them even sadder . V . Alone in the Palace The horse took the shortest road to the palace . In the evening they saw it in the distance , with lights in every window , just like the first time . The horse went to the stable by itself . The father and his daughter went into the great hall . There they found a lovely table with plenty of food and two plates . The merchant did not feel like eating . But Beauty wanted to look cheerful , so she sat down at the table and served her father . “ The Beast wants to make me fat before he eats me , ” she thought . “ That is why he gives me so much food . ”
