IX . Lights in the Palace As soon as Beauty said these words , the whole palace was full of light . There were fireworks and music , and everything seemed ready for a great party . But Beauty did not look at any of it . She turned to her dear Beast , and she was still afraid for his life . What a surprise it was ! The Beast was not there any more . At Beauty’s feet there was a young prince , one of the most handsome in the world . He was thanking her for breaking the spell . For a long time this spell had kept him in the shape of a beast . The prince was very handsome , but Beauty wanted to know only one thing . “ Where is the Beast ? ” she asked . “ He is here , at your feet , ” said the prince . “ I was the Beast . A wicked fairy turned me into a monster . There was only one way to break the spell : a beautiful girl had to agree to marry me . The fairy also did not allow me to show that I was clever . You were the only person in the world who loved me for my good heart . I offer you my crown , but even that is not enough to pay you for what you have done for me . ” Beauty was very happy and very surprised . She gave the prince her hand and helped him to get up . Together they went into the castle . In the great hall Beauty found her father and all her family , and she was full of joy . The lovely lady from her dream had brought them all to the palace . “ Beauty , ” said the lady , who was a fairy , “ come and receive the reward for your good choice . You chose a good heart over a handsome face and a clever mind . So you deserve a husband who has all three . You are going to be a great queen . But I hope that the crown will not spoil your goodness . ” Then the fairy turned to the two sisters . “ As for you , ladies , ” she said , “ I know your hearts and all the wickedness in them . From now on you will be two statues of stone . But inside the stone you will still think and feel . You will stand at the gate of your sister’s palace . Your punishment will be to see her happiness every day . You can only become yourselves again when you admit your faults . But I am afraid that you will stay statues for ever . Pride , anger , greed and laziness can sometimes change . But a wicked and jealous heart can only change by a miracle . ” At that moment the fairy waved her magic wand . In an instant , everyone in the hall was in the prince’s kingdom . His people welcomed him with great joy . The prince married Beauty , and they lived together for many , many years . Their happiness was complete , because it grew from goodness .
