I . The Palace Under the Sea Far out at sea , the water was as blue as the bluest flower and as clear as glass . But it was very deep there . No rope could reach the bottom . Down there , at the very bottom , lived the Sea King and his people . The bottom of the sea was not only sand . Strange trees and plants grew there . They moved with every little wave , as if they were alive . Fish swam in and out of their branches , just like birds in the trees on land . In the deepest place of all stood the Sea King’s palace . Its walls were made of coral . Its windows were made of amber , a clear yellow stone . The roof was made of shells , and in each shell lay a shining pearl . The Sea King’s wife was dead , so his old mother looked after his home . She was a clever woman , but very proud . She wore twelve oysters on her tail . The other great ladies of the sea could only wear six . But she loved her son’s six daughters , the little sea princesses , with all her heart . The six princesses were all pretty , but the youngest was the loveliest . Her skin was as soft as a rose petal , and her eyes were as blue as the deep sea . But like her sisters , she had no feet . Her body ended in a fish’s tail . All day long the sisters played in the palace . When the windows were open , the fish swam in , just as birds fly into our rooms . They ate from the princesses ’ hands . Outside the palace there was a big garden with red and blue trees . Their fruit shone like gold , and their flowers looked like little fires . When the water was calm , you could see the sun from down there . It looked like a purple flower . Each princess had her own small piece of the garden . One sister made her flower bed in the shape of a whale . But the youngest made hers round like the sun . She only grew flowers that were red like the sun . She was a strange child , quiet and thoughtful . Her sisters loved the odd things that they found in old ships . But she only wanted her red flowers and a statue of a handsome boy , made of white marble . It came from a ship that sank . Next to it she planted a pink weeping willow . The tree grew , and its soft branches hung over the statue . Nothing made her happier than stories about the world above the sea . Her old grandmother had to tell her all about ships and towns , people and animals . On land , the flowers had a sweet smell , but the flowers under the sea had none . On land , the woods were green , and the fish in the trees sang . Her grandmother called the birds “ fish ” , because the little mermaid had never seen a bird . “ When you are fifteen , ” her grandmother told her , “ you can go up out of the sea . You can sit on the rocks in the moonlight and watch the great ships . And you will see woods and towns too . ”
