II . The Five Sisters The next year the oldest sister was going to be fifteen . Each sister was one year younger than the one before . So the youngest had to wait five more years . The sisters made a promise . After her first visit , each of them was going to tell the others everything she saw . None of them wanted to go up as badly as the youngest . Many nights she stood at the window and looked up through the dark blue water . Sometimes a black shadow passed above her , like a cloud . Then she knew that it was a whale or a ship full of people . The people on the ship never guessed that a little mermaid was down below , holding up her white hands towards them . At last the oldest sister had her fifteenth birthday and swam up . When she came back , she had a hundred things to tell . The best thing , she said , was to look at a big town from the sea in the moonlight . Its lights were shining like stars . She heard music and people’s voices and the church bells . Oh , how the youngest sister listened ! Later , at her window , she almost believed that she could hear the bells too . The next year the second sister went up . She came out of the water just as the sun was going down . That , she said , was the loveliest thing of all . The sky looked like gold , and the clouds were pink and violet . A line of wild swans flew towards the sun , like a long white veil over the sea . She swam towards the sun too , but it sank into the waves . Then it was the third sister’s turn . She was the bravest , and she swam up a river . In a small bay she found some children , who were playing in the water . She wanted to play with them , but they ran away in fear . Then a little black animal came and barked at her . It was a dog , but she had never seen one . She was so frightened that she swam quickly back to the sea . But she never forgot the children who could swim without tails . The fourth sister was not so brave . She stayed in the middle of the sea . She saw ships so far away that they looked like seagulls . Dolphins jumped in the waves , and whales blew water high into the air . The fifth sister’s birthday was in winter . The sea was green , and big mountains of ice were floating on it . They shone like pearls and were taller than church towers . She sat on one of them and let the wind play with her hair . When a storm came , she sat calmly on the ice and watched the lightning . At first each sister loved the world up there . But they could go up whenever they wanted , so soon they grew tired of it . They said that it was nicer at home .
