Still , on many evenings the five sisters took each other’s arms and rose up together . They had lovely voices , lovelier than any human voice . When a storm came , they swam in front of the ships . There they sang sweet songs about the bottom of the sea . “ Don’t be afraid to come down , ” they sang to the sailors . But the sailors could not understand the words . But when a ship went down , the sailors drowned . They only reached the Sea King’s palace after death . When they went up , the youngest stayed at home alone and looked up after them . She wanted to cry , but mermaids have no tears , so they suffer even more . “ Oh , I wish I was fifteen ! ” she said . “ I know that I am going to love the world up there and the people in it . ” III . The Storm At last she was fifteen too . “ Now you are grown up , ” said her grandmother . She put a crown of white lilies in the little mermaid’s hair . Each petal was half a pearl . Then she put eight big oysters on the girl’s tail , because she was a princess . “ But they hurt me ! ” said the little mermaid . “ You must suffer a little if you want to look beautiful , ” said her grandmother . The little mermaid liked the red flowers in her garden much better than the crown . But she did not dare to take it off . “ Goodbye , ” she said , and she rose up through the water like a bubble . When she lifted her head out of the sea , the sun was just going down . The sea was very calm . Close by lay a big ship with three masts . There was music and singing on board . When it grew dark , the sailors lit a hundred coloured lamps . The little mermaid swam up to the window of the big cabin . When a wave lifted her , she could look in . Inside there were many fine people . The most handsome of them was a young prince with large dark eyes . He was about sixteen , and it was his birthday . When the prince came out on deck , more than a hundred rockets flew up into the sky . The little mermaid was so frightened that she went under the water . But soon she put her head up again . It looked as if all the stars were falling down on her ! She had never seen fireworks before . And how handsome the prince was ! He shook hands with everyone and smiled , while the music played in the night . It was very late , but the little mermaid could not take her eyes off the prince . Then the lamps went out , and the sea grew rough . The sailors put up the sails , and the ship sailed on . The waves grew higher and higher . Black clouds covered the sky , and there was lightning far away . A terrible storm was coming .
